ok so im resonably decent on an acoustic but want to start learning electric now. I want to learn metal music mostly but have no idea about electric guitars, pick ups etc. so could anyone recommend what type of guitars/amps are best for playing heavy metal and also where is the best place to buy. is it that thomann crowd?

    Cheers!

Essentially, any guitars with humbuckers will do for Heavy Metal.

If you want a better recommendation, you should really give us a budget. How much would you be willing to spend on a guitar?

    thanks

Im looking to spend about 4 or 500?

Alrighty, for 500 you can get yourself a very good Ibanez, especially if you look second hand. Something like a new RG350 would be well within your budget, or you could get an even higher end model if you were to look second hand.

    I heartily recommend Ibanez.

    I heartily recommend Ibanez.

I agree, can't really go wrong with an Ibanez for metal. You could also look at LTD by ESP. :)

Ibanez, LTD or Schecter are your best bet. I'd lean towards Shecter first then Ibanez then LTD.

Id recommend this. I swear you wont lose any rep. Lol. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Daisy-Rock-Electric-Guitar?sku=513060&CJAID=10381297&CJPID=1187135

But on a more serious, non banning note, I would recommend a rick. Simply for looks alone. Just luck at those bad boys. No one will mess with you if you have one of them.

make sure it has a pointy head and blood graphics on it!! ;)

some other thoughts to put in your head...
    7 string?
24 frets might be preferable for you, watch out, they are not always there)
Pickups - you might think about H-S-H or a coil tap
(buckers are the only thing for metal, but having a single coil sound option is nice, you may only realise it when you dont have it!)

another important point....neck shape and fretboard radius!..
shredders generally require a very flat fingerboard to allow for low actions
and to allow big bends, flatter neck profiles will help some people to get
    around the neck

I wouldn't say so, those are very cheap models.

The cheapest Ibanez I'd recommend is This one. Very good guitar indeed, and quite upgradable.

Yep, this was the second guitar I bought and I wasn't disappointed and yes i plan some surgery sometime in the new year. I have since upgraded to a Schecter and she's stunning :D

I'd second the motion for Schecter. Great guitars for the money and, unlike Ibanez at that level, they usually come with decent pickups. Look at a C1, it should have everything you need.

What I'd suggest too is that you get into some shops and play some different guitars. For example, have you ever played a floating trem bridge or will you be looking for a hardtail? Fat neck or skinny?

For metal? nuh -uh. Thick necks and sound to jangly.

Ibanez do good mid price. Of course, if you want sharp n pointy, there is always the bc Rich Ironbird. :) Not much bang for your buck though.

Jackson Charvelles play lovely too, had one a few years back.

if ye can't play it on a tele it ain't worth playin :D

500 will buy you (at a push) a used Japanese Ibanez RG - look for the 'prestige' badge. That's what i'd be looking for if i'd that kind of money to spend on a guitar.

If you can find a used RG1550, 2550, 2570 etc, your money will buy you a cosmetically plain, no-frills, no-nonsense guitar, but the inherent quality will smoke anything in the price range.

The fretwork on the recent Jap Ibanez's is world-class (literally), and the (high-end) Ibanez trems are the best around imo.

Go Jap Ibanez. The others are all great, especially Schecter, but I think the Ibanez is a more versatile metal guitar, particularly for the trem. I'm not an enormous fan of their stock pickups as a rule, but that's a relatively minor obstacle. Great guitars anyway. My personal recommendation goes for anything above a 470 level, they begin to really show class at that stage.

id recommend a second hand ltd 400 series, itl kick the ass of any other guitar for that price and beyond.

Frankly, stick a humbucker in the bridge, and you'd be flying. It works for Jim Root, John 5, and at times, Devin Townsend.

A thick neck won't stop you from playing metal, neither will single coil pikcups.

    Gotta disagree about the singlecoils.

They won't stop you, but that's about as far as i'd go in recommending them.

I remember seeing Nile (Heavvvvvy death metal) in Doranns a few years back. Karl Sanders was playing a blonde telecaster. Wasn't expecting that but yeah, stick some quality humbuckers on a guitar and you're ready to go.

Ltd and Schecters seem to be the standard metal guitars these days and they're generally great. Read the instrument reviews at harmonycental.com when you know what guitars you're interested in.

In other news, Mr. Sanders now plays this abomination: http://www.kxkguitars.com/pic_nile_guitar.html Should have stuck with the tele :-)

That guitar is so very Karl Sanders though.
