Artifacts in games since upgrade?

I upgraded my PC about 4 months ago and I only got around to installing some games and demos recently. Nearly every game I played had artifacts?
    My spec is Core 2 Duo E6420, Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R , 2GB Patriot DDR2 PC8000, nVidia 7900GT.
The obvious answer as to why I'm getting artifacts is because I have the cpu overclocked to 3.0Ghz but I always though this could only happen with overclocked graphics cards?

Have you tried it with the CPU running at stock speed?

Could just be a duff graphics card/dodgy gpu cooler if it still exhibits the artifacts.

Oh yeah forgot to mention the 7900GT was taken from my previous build where I had no problems with it although it may have developed a fault since then?

it'd be more likely to freeze or shut down if your CPU was overheating or not getting enough juice etc...

Sounds more like it's the card, what sort of temps are you getting? Could be memory going/gone bad, or just bad drivers, or fan is dodgey...

try downclocking it, see it that helps, or run the Artifacting tool in Ati Tool (either way you'll know if its the card) after all the obvious stuff first (new drivers, make sure fan is OK, all that)

I think it may have been a mixture of graphics card and cpu. I dropped my CPU down to 2.8Ghz and then started playing c&c 3 and it was fine. The cpu temp was around 45c and the graphics card got as high as 73c
