Missing periods on depo?

Hi all, I started on Depo Provera about a month ago and I'm due my period today but it didn't come and I'm usually like clockwork! However the doctor said it was screw up your cycle a bit and while at first I thought "deadly no cramps and moodswings" I'm thinking of how reassuring an assurance each month that you're not pregnant is. So anyway if it doesn't come at all this month should I be worried? The doc says periods usually stop within a year of starting on depo, so I'd just like to know what other girls' experiences of depo were, did you stop your periods entriely? was your cycle just irregular?

    Thanks :)

I never got a period while I was on Depo. Not once, ever. It varies from woman to woman, but most of the women I know who were on it never got a period at all while on it.

FYI, keep an eye on your general wellbeing with it - some women find it can have effects on their moods etc. Not saying it happens with every woman, some find it good, but again, from personal experience and from talking to other women who tried it, most I spoke to had bad mood swings to the point of depression, and most experienced weight gain. Just throwing that out there for ya, as anyone I know who went on it came off it again after a couple of months as the side effects outweighted the benefits, and with me they were so severe I wish I could have gone back in time and never taken it at all. Just a heads-up to keep an eye out on your moods etc. in case you find yourself feeling more irritable and down etc, as it took me a while to make the connection.

Good friend of mine was on it for a few years. Never had a period from the moment she went on it.

i was on it for over 2 years and not once did i get a period while on it. i came off it because of the mood swings and it was great in one way to have the reassurance of getting a period every month also. ;) it all depends on the individual.

You probably should have researched it a bit better. I only heard of it for the first time tonight (a thread on the fitness forum mentioned it), and one of the first things I read, when I googled it, was that it stops periods.

    Research these things people!!!

Yup, I'm on it now for the second time and both times my period stopped. i think it's great but some women find they need the reassurance of getting a period every month. I just know the science behind it and am comfortable with it's effectiveness.

As did my wife. If the Original Poster finds that she is becoming more and more down over time I would suggest she see a doctor rather than struggle on. It's nothing to worry about just something to be aware of.

Just so people are aware, long-term use of depo causes sever bone loss (osteoporosis) in women. The effect is largely reversible once women come off depo but for those who have a history of osteoporosis in their family it may be worth considering a different hormone contraceptive. Again, if worried, contact a doctor.

This is not medical advice, just something to be aware of. In my experience too many people (women in this case) simply walk into their doctors surgery, ask for contraception, don't ask enough questions of their doctors and end up poorly informed.

Oh that's good to see that so many women stopped altogether, I thought they sort of gradually went away, nice to know it's normal! Does anyone do anything regularly to make sure they;re not pregnant, like periodic tests or anything or do you just leave it?

I'm finding Depo very good, no bad side effects and I'm now not experiencing the horror that is periods. Happy days!
