    Yep.

Talk about how you got into it, where you went to get jobs, then on to how to market yourself, and finally, talk about gear. :)

Talk about how to go about obtaining press passes, getting onto the bands and record companies, how to present your work to them and make sure you tell people that there is no way in hell you can ever make a living from music photography in ireland....ever. Break em down and mould them into your own image after haha. I'l be there anyway so lookin forward to it

Pretty much what Al says. Also when you were asked to give the chat did they say in what context ie to other budding photographers, a general chat etc so from that it could perhaps help what to include.

I've been asked to give a small talk on music photography tomorrow.

How about starting here ... (after the fact I know). I know a bloke who used to take pictures of U2/Virgin Prunes back in the early days when they were relatively unknown bands here in Dublin and he got ridden stupid, if you'll pardon the expression. Never a penny or a word of thanks.

I guess he rests assured that even if he didn't, Anton Corbijn and his like did in the following years.

Tough gig, photographing musicians. I guess they have ego issues.

get your point -- but i love some of Corbijn images , especially the Joy Division stuff , and the Joshua tree shot is pretty cool , better than anythin recent

So can you give me any advice on marketing myself and obtaining passes?!

I've been met with so many dead ends it's depressing.

Yeah he had quite an infectious passion for them too. The words "China 2008" keep running through my mind now!

Well done on the music talk too, picked up a nice few tips, particularly regarding dealing with bands/managers/promoters etc. I don't think I'd ever have the balls to deal with all these people for any sort of serious music photography though!

yeah good talk man. Didn't realise it was you, I was at Sanchez too. The eclipse guy was a nutter, in a good way. I shot one of my fav bands for my first ever gig too. Once I had the pass sorted had to go to the bank for a loan to buy a camera haha

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,686 Mod ✭✭✭✭melekalikimaka

yeah i dont actually know all that much about it, dan asked me last minute, scary, as you saw, wasnt nearly prepared enough, eclipse guy put me to shame :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭unreggd

I didnt even know any of the bands I started off doin :p

but some others did so thats good

Next shoot is The Blizzards, shud be good

Ive been mainly takin pics at my friend's gigs the last few months

If ye want a pass, just go for it. If the band isnt too amazingly big, they'll more than likely just say yeah, cos its more publicity. Thats why the college magazine is the best xcuse to use :p
