Does anybody know if it is possible to change the frequencies on a upc digital box or are they locked in. I think it is possible on sky boxes.

what do you mean? Modulator frequencies can be changed but the frequencies of input channels can't.

I was just wondering if it was possible to tune in channels like can be done on the TV set itself.

Hi you can do it with the NTL decoders they come pre-programmed, there might be a secret code but never hear of it.

The short answer is no. All available channels will be automatically tuned and stored by the box on initial set-up and any new ones added as they become available. There are no other channels available on NTL digital other than the ones you can access on your box.

Digital cable is a closed system, in contrast to Sky, which although it presents itself as a closed system, the box can be used to tune other channels available via DVB-S, not just the ones Sky allow you to see via their EPG.

There is Press Up, Down, Left, Right at the title screen. A chime will confirm correct code entry. Hold A + Start to begin :D

Cable and Satellite are different distribution models. UPC (NTL/Chorus) own the cable system and decide what is on it. There are no free channels. You are not entitled to even be connected at all without a subscription. Only unencrypted analogue channels can be tuned directly and those will soon be gone.

Sky is selling Pay TV packages via Satellite. Just like you can buy a download on the Internet but there are other suppliers and free downloads, Sky does not own the Satellite(s). About 22 satellite positions can be received. Many possible Pay TV suppliers exist on Satellite and many companies pay the Satellite owners or Transponder space resellers for channel space.

Companies can optionally pay to be on Sky's EPG and then their free or pay channel is automatically on the Sky Digibox. If the Sky Digibox is pointed at a different Satellite to the one with Sky Channels or a channel does not pay for EPG listing to Sky, then the Sky Digibox can be manually tuned. Being able to add channels manually on a Satellite receiver is EU legal requirement. Sky arn't allowed to disable it. On cable there is no point to manual tuning and no requirement to have it.

Hence many channels that can be recieved on "Sky" are not Sky's. You can connect any satellite receiver and get free channels. You can even in theory subscribe to French, Spanish, Albanian, Arab or German pay TV companies (though not easily, but it is legal).

    see ICDG in my sig.
