Stepped out of your cave after a year long hiatus have you?

Virtua Fighter 5 was far and away the best available fighting game when it was released on the PS3 last year. The xbox 360 version is better with online play as well. If you have to get one fighting game in your lifetime make it this one.

*shields eyes from the burning sun* When is it released?

Since I can't find a date on eurogamer I presume it's been released already. There's a demo on xbox live if you want to try it. It takes a long time to get the most out of the game though, it takes ages to master but well worth it.

It's already been released? there's not really a much of "buzz" about it looking at the posts here

Only came out last Friday I think. Played the demo and Live and wasn't impressed, but it seems like the kind of game you need to devote hours of effort to to get the most out of it. Never played a VF game in the past (!), so might take the plunge and pick it up if I see it cheapish anywhere, and once the surprisingly high quality Christmas rush finally dries up.

    That's a pretty huge statement.
Better than the SoulCalibur series? unlikely.

It's a much better series than Soul Calibur but it's not immediately apparent and any hardcore fighting fan will tell you similar. Soul Calibur provides immediate thrills and can be mastered in a relatively small amount of time. Virtua Fighter is a much more hardcore game with more depth than any other fighter but it takes ages to master or to even approach a decent level. It's a game you really can't button mash in unlike Tekken or Soul Calibur. To get the most out of it you have to play competitively which makes xbox live a huge plus point over the PS3 game.

If you can't devote the time you may be better off with Soul Calibur.

    You're way off.

I'm a hardcore fighting fan. It's not about the amount of commands in the movelist.
Or the amount of time it takes to learn them.

    Games need balance.

The Demo is way too easy anyway - you can walk through it without losing a round. Although I'm sure that'll be different in the full game.

It's good fun in the Multiplayer mode, and I'd say online would be a laugh too - if it handles lag well enough. Needs to be responsive.

Might be worth a look, but wouldn't be top of my prioity list this Christmas. :)

ive just been messing about in multiplayer this evening.

    Hmmm.
Im not sure im convinced. Its fun yes, but the main problems i see with it are thus:

First off, ive been a big VF fan since i played VF4 on the ps2. My guy is lei fei. i know probbly about 80% of his moves, i know an assload of combos, and after a week in arcade mode, i have 'master' rank and 120 wins, 0 losses. So i know my stuff when it comes to lei and i can string combos together like nobodys business.
Now, playing online against people, first issue is, for want of a better word, button lag. The games are all fairly lag free tbh, its really quite good, but there definitely is a split second delay betweek pressing the button and the action being performed. This really messes up timing of combos and stuff i find. I won about as many games as i lost, but all in all i think i prefer SP. I hat eplaying against people who use the same move over and over or just spam 'punch'.
Its alright, but quest mode is where ill do most of my fighting i think.

Yeah fighter games are infamous for being difficult to get online - broadband connections just aren't fast enough yet to register the split second decisions necessary for combos and the like.

And agree on whoever said the demo was too easy. I assume in game the AI is actually vastly superior?

Well the game itself is excellent, without a doubt the best beat em up on 360. It pisses all over doa4. The lower ranked players in quest mode are a walk over, but when you get tot he 10th dans and above youre in for a good kicking.

The later fights have their AI based off the best VF players in japan so it's gets very tough later.

VF5 is much more well balanced than Soul Calibur 2 which had a lot of useless characters.

Soul Calibur 2 is one of the most balanced fighting games ever made.

Only select characters were available in AE. I'm downloading VF5 demo now.
It has zero competition on the 360, maybe that's why you think it's so good.

I've got nearly every console under the sun and I've got the PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5. I'm not saying Soul Calibur is crap, it's not. I end up playing that more. It's just that if you can devote the time to it Virtua Fighter 5 is a far deeper and rewarding game. If you see the japanese arcades nobody is really playing soul calibur anymore but there are queues for the Virtua Fighter 5 machines. It's usually a good indication of the quality of fighting game.

Or maybe it's just a newer game...
The same happened when the latest Tekken came out. Does that mean that it is better than the older Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur? No.

I played the VF5 demo for a bit, used each character (4 of them) and went through their command list.
It's a decent game alright, one I will probably play a LOT more of.
It doesn't feel anywhere near as hardcore as SC of SF though.
    It's 3d move system isn't very smooth.
It does have a tonne of moves and stances and a lot of potential. It's just not exciting enough I think.

    How do you guard impact?
