    Hi there,
My girlfriend and I are about to start having sex without condoms for the first time, by using the contraceptive patch, so we were wondering about any possible decrease in the protection when she drinks alcohol. She asked her doc everything about it but that. So, any ideas about it?

As far as I know, alcohol won't affect contraceptives, unless you get sick. Antibiotics and illness would be among the main reasons why contraceptive pills fail.

However, she should really ask her GP.

If it's a patch it shouldn't affect it cause the hormones go straight to the blood not through the stomach[when one is using pills].
Been using patches for quite some time[2 years] and everythings fine by now [though I don't like alcohol that much].
IMHO better ask than be sorry ;)

You can try googling the brand name to see what it says in combination with alcohol but the GP/ pharmacist would be best.

Did she not ask her GP or the chemist or read the leaflet that came with the patch ?

I used the patch for 6 months and I don't remember alcohol having any effect or hearing about it and I did my research. The reason I took it was because it's not affected if you get sick. (I'm a puker!). I'd get her to ask the pharmacist or give her doctor a quick call, jsut to be sure. It'll only take 2 or 3 minutes. She doesn't even have to go down there!

Do those patchs actually stay on for the whole week?

One of my sister's uses them and they do stay on.
