    Hi,

Have car over in UK with me for the time being..

I heard irish insurance will only cover you in the uk for 30 days? and your ok for 3 months with the irish reg. whats the point of this if you cant insure an irish reg in the uk? might aswell be 30 days across the board

Any ideas how long can you have irish car in uk without having to reg/insure/tax it there?

It's insured / reg'ed / tax in ireland, but i don't want to have to go to all the trouble of insuring it over here if i'm bringing it home again to sell.

    Cheers
    Will

Ring your insurance company for details on insurance, it differs with every company.
For a taxed, fully insured and registered car you are allowed to drive for upto 6 months in the UK (it's your insurance clauses that may bring this figure down).

Personally if you're over there for any length of time I'd say buy a car there.

Won't be buying a car here, won't be keeping this one here for long either though :)

    Cheers. Useful link

Hi there, can I ask what you ended up doing with your car? I am in the same position myself at the moment...very frustrating...my Irish company won't insure me for longer than 30 days and U.K. companies looking for stupid money(£1500 when my Irish insurance last year was €350). I don't want to register it in the U.K. if I am bringing it back in a couple of months.
Thanks - any advice greatly appreciated!

Are you sure? Ring them and read your policy document to be sure. Mine was 30 days comp insurance abroad followed by 60 or 90 days TPF&T up to a maximum of 120 days in any 12-month period, unless I asked them to do something different.

Only your company / broker can tell you, but read your policy and cert together with all the inclusion / exclusions first; it's all there in black and white.

Ring a few insurance companies in Ireland and see if they will cover you for longer. If not you will need to suck it up and get it insured using the VIN while in the UK.

Also keep proof in the car that you are not a UK resident here as the police can be strict on UK residents driving non UK cars.

Try Liberty. When they were Quinn, they were the only insurers who would cover me for bringing the car over and right up until I got it VRT'd. Hopefully, they might insure the reverse way too.
