Concerned over AVG's ability to detect

Have a few files on a USB key. On my home PC I have AVG free on auto update, which it does every other day, and I never interfere with updates. On another PC, I have McAfee (reluctantly). On my USB key I have these files for about a month now, mostly MP3s, and one EXE. When I went to use the EXE on the other PC with McAfee, it told me the EXE was infected. I was surprised, and McAfee said it couldn't be cleaned. So I went home, and scanned the file with AVG and said there were no threats.

Now I'm worried. Have many viruses been known to go undetected by AVG free, or does one need to update to a more costly Anti-Virus solution?

i dunno, ive heard mixed reviews of avg, some of my friends despise it,others swear by it, i had a bad experience with it tho,and have used avast for the last few years. thi year i also got zonealarm to boost my defence. i think its down to preference, avg is free and so is avast and ive never had problems wit avast (thank god cuz i aint paying for software extras!)
check out download.com, a few months ago they had a great tutorial on programs that work great together in keepin ur pc protected, and are mostly free to boot.

AVG is quite good at detecting viruses, McAfee isn't.

Chances are it's a false positive by McAfee. Run the file through Jotti if you want to make sure

Its not the first time iv noticed AVG ignoring stuff, when other AVs have picked them up just fine.
