DVI out to HDMI in

I have this Toshiba laptop that I've recently found out has a digital output (DVI) and i have a hd ready tv that has a HDMI in and composite in.
I have some hd demos that I'd like to test on my tv to see the quality.

Whats the best way for me to connect the laptop to the tv to get the optimal connection quality. Is it possible the get a DVI to HDMI lead and if so is this better than composite.

From what I gather from searching online my DVI out is a DVI-D which only carries picture (maybe someone more pc literate can confirm) so I recon ill have to get an audio out from laptop to the TV. If I connect the pc by hdmi will the TV recognise the sound from a different source, ie one of the audio in's on the tv at the same time as displaying the picture from the HDMI in.

My head is'nt built for this stuff.
    thanks

You're best using a digital connection as you've said yourself. DVI or HDMI will both fit the bill nicely. Avoid component [analogue] as you're lucky to have better options for connectivity. I'd use a DVI-HDMI cable for connecting to the TV.

Again, you're correct in thinking that DVI carries only video whereas HDMI carries both audio and video [high bandwidth cable].

When you use the adapter for DVI-HDMI, it will still be video only as the adapter can't introduce what wasn't there in the first place. You will need to connect the audio separately as a result.

    Thanks for your reply.

If I connect the DVI to HDMI and switch the TV imput to HDMI will it channel sound from a different imput or will I have to hook up the laptop audio to external speakers?

I don't think you can connect the laptop's sound output to the TV directly -- things have surely advanced since my last TV purchase ;).

You could connect to external speakers or a hi-fi no problem alright using a cable like this [line out to phono].

Sorry to bump this thread but I didn't want to start a new one.

I have the same laptop as in post 1, I now have the correct cable (dvi -hdmi) the cable snugly fits in the laptop and tv.

Ive tried to activate the video to the tv through the laptop fn keys (fn+F5) and cycled through the options and none have even made a flicker on the tv.

The laptop has and Nvidia go 8600 gfx card if thats any help. I've searched the web for any reports of bugs/driver probs and searched the toshiba faq's for help (their support site is terrible)

I havent got the laptop manual to hand at the moment. Can anyone help me get some video.
