    And what about Maxol,
Maxol has announced it too is increasing fuel prices - adding 2.68 cent per litre to petrol, 3.23 cent per litre to diesel and an average of 2.31 cent per litre of home heating oil. The company said the rise was necessary given the 'extremely strong rise in prices' and the fact that larger rivals were increasing prices.

    What ever happened to competition??

He said a further factor in the price rise was an increase to one cent on every litre in the Government fuel levy from November 1

glad to see the goverment dont mind heigthening the burden either

    GBP£1.01 /litre = Eur 1.46, not 2.00...........

    Mind you, it's still nuts.

I don't get how, given the current collapse in the US€, that it isn't coming down..........and as for ADDING tax at a time like this - FFS ! Inflation management my arse.

If the mullahs had any brains, they'd ask to be paid in Euro's..........now that would be interesting..........

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Oil is currently sold in US$s. I don't get your point.

I seem to remember somewhere a year or two ago that Saudi was changing from selling oil in US$ to €.

There is a theory that part of the reason for the US invasion of Iraq was Saddam's decision to start selling oil in euros rather than dollars.

Exactly, a few months before America went in, Iraq changed to selling oil in €, which makes them a little more money the selling in $. first thing america did when the 'liberated' the country was to change oil pricing and sales back to $, even though it benifited Iraq in no way.

    Get my point?

Oil is 92 dollars a barrel, even at $1.40 to the euro, the price was going to go up at some point.

Up to €1.79 on the quays in Dublin!!

Is this a temporary markup as usual or a permanent levy?

Shouldnt a higher demand warrant a price reduction, not making it more expensive :D

    Is diesel gone up too?

And is additional taxing indicated to cut down on oil usage in any way. ah of course not, mo money mo money mo money

    tad bit immature yeah:(

€1.79? thats taking the wee.
Danny Murray CEO of Topaz was on Newstalk this morning and confirmed that this outlet would not have its contract renewed when it is up next month. He is also on the record (from several months ago) telling people not to go there.

The argument for having a paraffin stove over a petrol is getting stronger and stronger by the day.

Even though VRT makes diesels ridiculously expensive in general, 27.8% of new cars are now paraffin stoves(compared to 13.5% of new cars sold only 8 years ago), and diesel is set to get ever more popular as prices at the pumps head north.

Allegedly, though I've heard this from a couple of people*, that petrol station gets away with it because they have a contract with a number of Government departments, whose drivers are "encouraged" to fill up there at the taxpayers expense. The owner isn't really relying on passing trade from ordinary punters, but on fleets of State cars, trucks, ambulances etc.

Yet another cosy little corrupt deal in Ahern's Kleptocracy.

    * people in pubs, but they were State employees themselves, so...

What rubbish IMO. I know you said the word 'allegedly', but thats quite a serious and libelluous allegation to have in the public domain, especially on Motors, which is one of the busiest fora here on boards.

Unless its true of course, but how are we supposed to know that?

And has anyone fogotton that there is a thing called competition for a reason?

If you don't like it don't buy it. Go somewhere else. If people are dumb enough/desperate enough to pay that amount for petrol then that's their loss. Tough poopy. Get over it.

Compared to the UK and some European countries probably, but you could hardly call €1.20 a litre cheap ! (its at times like this that the government thanks god that we switched to litres, imagine the fuss there would be if we still used gallons and you were being charged €5.40 a gallon!)

And I'll scream if any Minister has the nerve to come on the news and claims that the high cost of motor fuel is due to international oil prices, when government tax accounts for over 60% of the price at the pumps. If petrol was untaxed, it would cost about €0.50 a litre(less than the cost of bottled spring water)!

Have a read of this for Petro Dollars

@kbannon :- I know that Statoil and Shell are owned by Topaz, but I thought that Maxol where theor own people and they are saying that one of the reasons they are increasing their price was because of rivals incresing also.

I was trying to highlight the reduction in competition in the market given that the competition authority fupped up on the Shell takeover

Controversial statement so ease up on the flaming :D

I remember the fuel crises in the UK a few years ago and some pundit on Sky News made an interesting comment.

People bitch and moan about a few cent/pence on a litre of fuel.
But this had to be pumped, refined, shipped and piped to get to the end user.
A lot of engineering and a lot of expense.

At the same time people are happy to pay big money for mineral water (Ballygown 500ml is €1.20 afaik). And it's hardly expensive to produce bottled water.

Yes, I know people don't buy 50 litres of water every few weeks.
But an interesting analogy all the same.
