Alright lads, any engineers (civil/structural in particular) participated in their placements abroad? Looks great, I was gonna apply last year but you need to be 3rd/4th year to apply, so now that i'm in 3rd year I think it's worth a shot.

    Advice/Comments/Opinions/Crap Jokes all welcome!:D

I'm studying civil engineering (want to specialise in structures). It sounds really good. I'd consider it but I have absolutely no second language. Can you only go to Germany or France?

This was mentioned in the other thread. The fact that you don't get paid would put me off hugely. You're going to want to be rewarded for all the hours you put in.

As I mentioned in the other thread, you do get paid.

The website contains a pdf listing all the countries and employers who took part in 2006. There must be 70+ countries
You don't need a foreign language. In my exchange all the trainees used English in their work, even though it wasn't their first language.

I really think it is an excellent opportunity, I would never have been able to work in my host country without Iaesta. You have the most amazing social life because your with a group of people focused on enjoying themselves.
My work was also very interesting for me. I wouldn't have gotten expierence in that field at home, and I think its the field for me. :)

Oops my bad! I had gotten it into my head that you didn't get paid by them. So do you get a proper wage (I was on €400/week during my work experience)?

Because Irish wages are very high, and the going rate in most countries is going to look poor in comparision.
You also can't cherrypick jobs on the basis of wages, you don't find out how much you are getting until you have the job. Although if you wanted to, chosing someplace like Norway would probably help. Then again living is very expensive there.

We were paid a decent wage by local standards, and living costs were considerably lower. So we had enough to pay rent, eat out everyday and go out 4+ times a week. I'd say I put about the same as I'd spend on a weeks holiday into it myself, including flights, travelling around and sightseeing.

I have also worked for a summer here, and if you want to save for anything on 400. You have to make big sacrifices and you might just get a holiday at the end of it.

Ahhh, so we're classmates. good ole boards-everyone should use this site! Ya going for this Laing O'Rourke thing?

Moonbaby, you've certainly sold it to me. Where did you do your placement? I was only gonna put down the UK then maybe Spain or Portugal or somewhere close enough (can't afford expensive flights to the states or oz)

I'm gonna apply this week, just have to get my results transcripts and tell the bird I'll hopefully be leaving her here for the summer:eek:
