film camera which means that the cost of film will soon dampen enthusiasm

The processing end of film is the worst. When colour film became popular and practically everone used labs for processing the standard of photographs deteriorated badly. There are choices, to do your own monochrome processing or scan from colour slides and do your own printing. Generally digital is the best option, the results from Digital SLRs are just amazing and a big part of the difference is that you can see the results immediately.

I used my Father's Seagull once before I decided to move to digital (the cost of film development was huge!)

I'd say think carefully before deciding to buy... E90 could get you a lens to go with a dSLR...

On the other hand using film will make you slow down and think about each photograph (at least it made me think - each shot costing effectively 35c no matter how good or bad it was. A great incentive to make every shot good!)

Thanks for the replies. I see the problem with the "cost per shot" as opposed to digital.
