Irish Channels FTA?

Just a quick query. Thinking of getting rid of sky subscription and removed viewing card to see what channels were free to air. I noticed that rté1, rté2, tv3 and tg4 were not available. Can we not receive these through our box without a subscription? We can't put an aerial on our roof because they're not allowed on our estate but we're allowed a sky dish (go figure!). Any suggestions???

You need a sub to receive these on SKY as has been said many times in this forum.
Is there anyone else in your estate not using Sky(Chorus/ntl?), might be a good place to start.

That's what i thought but was hoping i got it wrong. Guess it's sky or an indoor aerial! Will see if rules have changed and maybe are allowed an aerial now, can't hurt asking :). Thanks for your help.

This seems to be a constant similar question, could we put the answer up as a sticky re: RTE not available Free on Satellite.

There is already an FAQ sticky thread. And a wiki FAQ site.

    Seems nobody reads stickies anyway.

FedUpWithChorus123 is wondering how to pick up RTE, because its "free", from his shiny new satellite dish and sees the following stickies:

    Lidl Silvercrest Digi Sat System
    Setanta Reception Problems
Channel4 on Sky - Blocked Programming
    FAQ - Your input
Tuning in extra BBC & ITV channels (and other info)
FORUM RULES (please read) & Warning About Cloning / Illegal Sourcing of Cards
Satellite Shops: both online and bricks & mortar

In fairness, there is nothing there to even hint that it is impossible to pick up RTE for free. Yes it's in the FAQ, but new people arrive with insightful thoughts that nobody in the world has had before ;)

A sticky bluntly saying RTE is not Free To Air on Satellite and then explaining inside how you can pick up RTE on Sat. and rules regarding addresses etc would probably save a lot of time and effort. That or make the Faq more obvious like "READ THIS FIRST: 90% chance your question is already answered!"

Noted, though too many stickies can be messy! :)

RTE availability isn't the only FAQ that's asked.

True on both counts, nobody like a forum full of stickies. Perhaps making the Faq more prominent would be sufficient?

I have changed the title of the thread in question.

Might look into it further in the future.

An aerial in the attic , though not ideal, can usually produce reasonable results if it is the correct group for the transmitter and carefully placed and aligned with the aid of a signal meter. Best to get your local reputable aerial installer to do this.
Alternatively, if your home is wired for cable (UPC , Chorus or NTL cable crosses your property), you can access the four Irish channels, and sometimes Channel 6 for what it's worth, FTA just by connecting to the cable tap-off point and tuning the TV in the VHF band. Quality may not be as good as an aerial.

A decent installer should be able to install your FTA sat. system and fix up one of the above options in a couple of hours.

At risk of cross threading here, but you can get RTE1-2, TG4 and TV3 FTA on digital in some parts of the country. I can in Donabate, with a bog standard digital tuner on my LG flat panel and an small aerial in the attic facing south. OK, I know its a trail etc, but it is an option.
