I would recommend a combination of ensuring that the firewall is turned on and Little Snitch to ensure than no application/whatever is talking to somewhere it shouldn't (e.g. phoning home, trojan horse, etc)

    Security lesson 1: Failed.

Never assume. In this case, you assume incorrectly.

The Tiger firewall was off by default too - must be a reason, but I can't think of it...

The OS-X firewall is off by default because most of the vulnerable ports are closed by default, bar a couple used by the core OS. All the key OS apps have been sandboxed in Leopard, along with several other new security features listed here:

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#security

OS X has so far not had a single virus spread in the wild. In 4 years of use I haven't even come across any spyware. A few proof of concept trojans have been created by hackers to highlight vulnerabilities in Safari, but they all required the user to provide the admin password or deliberately install and activate before they could do anything. Antivirus companies regularly talk up these threats to push their Mac software. So I wouldn't worry too much but adding an antivirus package and running the firewall will help protect against any possible future developments.
