No science for PGCE?

    Hi Guys,

At the moment I am trying to apply for a post-grad in primary teaching in the UK. Whilst doing so, I have discovered that I need the equivilant of a C in gsce science, english and maths. I didn't do science for the Leaving Cert but have an honours degree in psychology. As far as i'm aware, it's up to the college's discretion whether they accept that instead of the GCSE science grade, as my course was very science based.
I have been told that there are about 5 colleges in the uk that it is still possible to do the pgce in even without science.....one being glasgow and another aberdeen. Neither of which would have been in my top choices. Does anyone know of any other colleges that it is possibly to study in without science?
Im finding it really really difficult to get any other information, so any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially as time for my application is running out!!

ashnel1, apply for the KS1/KS2 course. That'll qualify you to teach primary level. Don't go for early years as we don't have a foundation stage (as they call it) in Ireland.
I'm currently doing the PGCE in Liverpool and there you have to pick a specialist subject. It is nothing really. It is just an extra few hours a week that will look good on your CV when you go for a job over here if you want to be a subject leader in a school.
Don't fret and good luck with the application!

If this doesn't work out for you in time for this year, you might consider doing an open university science course and then you'd be sorted for next year.

My wife did a course S103 with them a couple of years ago and it was really good - the materials are excellent and the course looked really interesting.

    Best of luck.
