Family Holiday by ferry - ideas?

As a family of 5 - one with dislike of flying - we are thinking of taking a ferry to France or Spain next year. Northern Spain is the favoured destination but would entail 2 ferries. The budget is not huge - c. 2k for travel and accomodation, and the idea of campsites or 'holiday resorts' do not appeal. Has anyone got an idea of something a bit different in family holidays?

You could also look at using the channel tunnel, car can be carried down south as well, never did the car by train but have used the tunnell a couple of times, usually better if heading eastwards.

Google chalets with pools if you want to avoid the campsites.

Thanks for that. Hadn't thought of the chunnel. Is there an off-the-beaten track type of holiday accomodation in Spain such as the Italian agri-tourisme, does anyone know?
