howdy, got me hands on the anytime vista install disc. did an install on my pc, clean full install..anyways at the end you can buy a licence online for the version of vista you install..

when i clicked on the option to buy a licence online, from vista, heres the prices i got,

    vista ultimate €452
    Vista home Premium €285

i have currently windows xp media centre at the minute, so feck that i reinstalled xp media centre, and decided not to go with vista..

i thought the upgrade licence was cheaper than the prices above?

anyways ill stick with what i have for the time being, and maybe when they release vista SP1 or SP2 i might consider changing, if prices drop...

have 4 gb ram now in my media centre xp pc, ill hold out till next year before considering vista again...

It is. But you did a full clean install, not an upgrade. The upgrade disc doesn't allow for a clean install.

You can get it cheaper OEM as well, if you buy it with some hardware.

IMO, Vista probably isn't worth the retail prices if you're just going to upgrade an exisiting machine. Buying new however, and I think you'd be mad not to get it, everything will be Vista in a year's time and it's more secure, and easier to support as it's harder to get spyware into (though not impossible :)).

As a result, we should also start getting programs which properly follow security models, and don't rely on the user being an admin to do anything. That is going to be a big plus for the PC industry, and reduce the impact of many of the program bugs being found of late (flash, acrobat, winamp, itunes exploits).

how long will updates be available for xp home? and supported?

XP will be supported, but only from the point of view of security bugs. As far as I know, you can still get all the updates for windows98/Me (can anyone say otherwise), just no new updates have been released in a while, so XP will be similar, Service Pack 3 for XP will be the last set of new features for the OS.

Also, XP is regardless of edition (Home, MCE, Pro etc.).

Initially they said the end of 2009, but after Dell and other manufacturers starting supplying machines with XP again they've had to revise this afaik.

I think they didn't realise themselves the scale of what they were doing. Windows 95/NT4 was the last time the end user saw a drastic change in Windows. There was something of an evolution from 95 to XP where the UI stayed more-or-less the same (or at least very familiar), however it was the engine that took most of the upgrades. Vista is very different though with both UI and engine getting something of an overhaul.

I feel that MS underestimated the amount of time it would take to penetrate. It's not helped by the fact that people are still happy with XP too.

I don't think there's much reason to worry about upgrading right now. Manufacturers will still ensure that their products are XP friendly for a long while to come. I still see new hardware coming out with Windows 98 drivers in the box. Madness.

    * picks up box that says windows 98 drivers - Noooooo ! it's SE only <sobs> *

Changing the interface was a big mistake IMHO, how many people still use Classic with XP ?

If you've seen Beryl then the Vista interface seems flat. call me a Luddite but back in the days of Windows 3.1 I had all my common programs in one window in program manager with hot keys and file manger would list / search for all registered documents types instead of having to do them one by one. And you didn't have to go through a million menus to get into the system settings in control panel. /mini rant

I can't see how anyone can justify buying more ram and a bigger hard drive to buy a retail version of windows when they could get a new pc with oem for the same money, unless they liked moving windows to different machines on a regular basis

Why would any1 want or need Vista when ya can do this 4 free. Btw i only started with Ubuntu 2 weeks ago & use it for everything now. Never boot to Vista at all. I'm only keeping it for directx 10 games (when i get a dx10 gpu). I can run Vista or Xp in Virtualbox anyway if i need inside Ubuntu.

    Open source FTW
