decided to get 2 new boards for my rigs, got the asus striker extreme and the p5n-e sli. the striker is great. the p5n...well my story goes like this.. installed fine, vista n hardware all fine. updated the drivers and all was still great. ran the asus update utility to update the bios, it crashed. now when i turn the pc on i get nothing, no post not even a beep. the crashfree bios tool is supposed to kick in at this point and install the original bios when a flash fails. was wondering if anyone knew if there was a combo of keys that would make it start or do i need a new bios chip?

I'd say contact your manufacturer for a new bios chip. Never heard of any1 recovering from a failed bios flash without taking chip out of the mobo & flashing it externally. Dont suppose you got an eprom programmer :D

Btw, I've always added a floppy just 2 flash my bios as i dont trust flashing from windows

the power light on the mobo comes on and my fans spin, it annoyingly makes my fans on the water cooler spin up to 100%.

yea asus boards have an inbuilt utility that in theory is supposed to start after a failed flash... may just get a new chip i guess... and a floppy drive haha

how is that done? i was told that a floppy might be better to boot from as its one of the first devices that a pc will look for when posting, bear in mind tho that i don't get any boot at all, just power on, fans begin to spin, the hard drive spins a little and it then makes my GPU fan spin up to 100%

If the BIOS is screwed then it won't boot from anything :(
Fastest thing is to find someone with the same board and do a "hot flash" with your chip.

You can order a new chip from these guys (flashed with whatever BIOS you want): http://www.badflash.com/ http://biosrecovery.com http://bios-repair.co.uk/

floppy will be the only option if it even is an option.

check the asus site for a bios recovery method, each maker has a different method but there will be one.

That board has a backup BIOS/Crashfree.
CrashFree BIOS 3 is used this way:
    1. Insert the media (USB key, floppy or CD) that contains the unzipped BIOS file that failed to update, renamed to P5xx.ROM.(check name from MB CD)
    2. Power down.
    3. Power up.

But i see that someone on the ASUS forum has already answered your question ;)
