cavity block or cavity wall

    Hi.
I'm considering buying a 7 year old dormer bungalow. The original plans show the walls as cavity walls (ie inner and outer leaves). However I suspect that it is a cavity block wall since there is insulation (fibre glass/moisture membrane/dry lined slab) on the inside. Is there anyway to definitively tell what type of walls these are?

7 yrs old: prolly not CB. prolly uninsulated CW

are the electric sockets fitted to the DL?.

if so remove one of them and bore a small hole (8mm) through the block at the back till u reach the cavity

Hi Thanks for that. Yes the sockets are fitted to the DL. I will try that. Some people have been telling me that the thickness of the wall indicates a CB. I measured the thickness from inside to outside (from dry dash on the outside to dry line on the inside and got about 12.5 inches.

when u take off the socket u will know how thick the DL is.

when drilling keep the bit away from the glass fibre, it can get wrapped around it v quickly.

It may be CB if it is a one off self build out in the stykes.

since u know waht a CB is like then u may have to drill a few holes to avoid the continuous sections: take off a double socket

In an uninsulated wall the thickness will tell, but if drylined the total will be around 300mm, well just over.

Get into the attic, it may be possible to see the blocks from the top at the eaves or top of gable.

Screwing off the flap/grill on an extractor vent may help
