During the course of the evening I flicked on the Late late Show between other progs and have glimpsed the guy who plays Ken Barlow in Corrie, Westlife and Dana, David Gray was a musical interlude.

The LLS once shook whole nations as it picked apart this countries morality and mentality, and when not causing ructions it had top draw stars and celebs. Now its a shop window for the never-likely-to-be, the clapped out and rent-a-celeb.

Does any family or even just middle aged couples settle down in front of this clapped out time filler anymore?

    Mike.

Shockingly its still the top rated show on RTÉ at the moment. For as long as people keep watching that absolute plank RTÉ will keep broadcasting it.

Sooner people get a decent alternative to watch on the national channels (RTE Two and TV3) the sooner people will switch it off and RTÉ can stop wasting a vast chunk of our licence fee's on keeping that tit on tv. Get him back to the radio where he belongs, he is not suited to tv.

The last time I flicked over to it, Pat had a couple of burnt kids and their mother on. It was obvious the kids didn't want to be there and even more awkward with Pats uncomfortable silences and attempts to be warm and caring.

It really is a bad programme, Pat has the personality of a plank of wood. I tuned in last night just to see the photo competition.
One of the Westlife lads looked like he morphed into Daniel O'Donnell.

Pat is socially stunted. He can credit his success to playing second fiddle to Gay in the kenny live days where Daniel o Donnell had a weekly residency as far as I could determine from staying in my grans on a Sat Nights, and a radio career (where interaction with common folk was kept at radiowaves length).

Gay leaves and they say "well we know Pat is useless but we're too spineless to pass him over"

Anyway I feel we should leave as is as it is great terrible TV.

I like Questions & Answers and to a lesser extent Prime Time for staying up to date on my Current Affairs.

Damn, I was hoping for an Alan Partridge thread :(

Entertainment-wise LLS is just as rubbish as ever. 20 years ago a visit from Lenny Henry would have been an annual highlight for the show so it shows you how low the bar was.

Politically I think it's the people of Ireland who have changed. Back in the day politics probably had a greater direct impact on our lives but nowadays we've a better standard of living now and we can remain comfortably aloof from such matters. We’re more obsessed with celebrity than religion or nationality these days. We don't really care as a nation about our identity (morality or mentality) and the show is just reflecting that by cutting that aspect out.

As for the host, well I always hated the sight of uncle Gaylord and his smarmy prophesising so Plank doesn’t bother me as much as he clearly does others.

But that's the thing though, back in it's heyday how often would the show actually have ground breaking issues covered? I was only a kid back then and my only goal was to try and stay awake for the Hammer Horror movie on afterwards but never made it past 9:30.

As Pigman pointed out, guests like Lenny Henry were highlights back then so I'd say it was always sh1te with the odd relevant issue covered and it's selective memory that makes us think that the LLS was better back in the day.

Well if this forum is anything to go by quite a lot of young people still watch it. Or at least flick between the channels on a Friday night.

I bet if RTE did decide to scrap the show you'd have the same people that were giving out about it complaining that you can't scrap it as it is a national institution.

BaZmO* I must older than you I recall proper stars of the era like Peter Ustinov, Oliver Reed and Rod Taylor (arm wrestling to win the affections of Susan George!), David Niven, Robert Mitchum and so on. It was back when movie stars still did the rounds and they did'nt just talk about thier latest release.

Yeah I remember them too, but that was a long long time ago. And guests of that calibre certainly weren't on every week. Times have changed and shows like the LLS are not the only outlet for artists/actors to pimp their wares.

I'm delighted to see that I still have a fan base in Ireland. Thanks.

Of course you may be wondering how I came to read this post given my hectic schedule on Norfolk Nights and all of my tv work for UKTV Conquest but the truth is I googled this reference (quite by accident I can assure you) when I was checking references for an upcoming programme due to be shown on Wedding TV UK + 1 about the influence of 80's music on guests at wedding receptions.

I agree with you Pigman (ugh..what a horrible name) that people who watch programmes such as the Late Late Show are just....SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!

Although I do think that presenter Pat Kenny and I do have a lot in common in terms of outlook on life, wardrobe, presenting style, intellect etc.

Anyway, good to hear from you people in Ireland and if you ever come to visit the rest of Britain...especially the greater Norwich area, I would be happy to hear from you...well... after Lynn has checked you out...can't be too careful these days...stalkers are more common than one would think.

    Ahaaaa,
    Alan.

    Aparently,

Coogan was in Ireland in the early 90's when he saw kenny live, this inspired him to convert partridge to a chat show host.

    So i heard.

I'd love that to be true.
