    Hi,
Does anyone know the difference between Digital Choice and Digital Select?
I called NTL to ask for a channel list but they never sent one out.
The website shows a few icons - but doesnt give much more info.
I'd love to see a proper channel list for both channels.

Also - should I get their DVR now or wait for the new HD box?

Digital select is a selection of what NTL offer on their digital max pack whereas digital choice is for MMDS i.e people who live outside NTL's cabled areas. You can get a full list of the channels for the select pack here: http://www.upc.ie/television/digitaltv/select/ and you can get the full list of channels for the MMDS (Choice) pack here :http://www.upc.ie/television/digitaltv/choice/

I think the point the OP was making was that neither of these two pages (or the one for Digital Max) constitute what he'd call a 'list', and I agree with him. There's no real way of comparing the two side by side, unless you're going to play a rather frustrating game of 'spot the difference', flicking between the two web pages. Sometimes it's not immediately obvious which logo corresponds with which channel either if you've never seen the channel in question.

It's a pretty badly designed web page anyway .. the bit explaining that Choice is only available for non cable people isn't exactly obvious, and the naming doesn't exactly give it away either.

Yeah on the choice section in tiny text it explians that it's only for non cable customers you'd swear they didn't want you to know this.

Given that there are 3 different tariiffs UPS/Chorus (and maybe NTL) make it very difficult to tell what channels you get on each. I live in Swords and when Chorus upgraded we got a few extra channels along with a price increase to 30.99 which corresponds to Digital Max but I definitely do not get all the channels listed at the link above for the digital max package so am I paying for channels I dont get?

Also if I want to downgrade what channels do I lose? I may be happy with only the channels on a lesser package but its is near impossible to tell what exact channels each package gives. I think there is a possible issue with false advertising as accoring to the UPC website logos I should get SciFi, Comedy 2, MTV2 et al but I dont.

There is a clear list of UPC channels on Wikipedia here
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_channels_on_UPC_Ireland

It does not break it down package by package

It's nice that people are trying to fill in the gap but really UPC should be posting official channel lists by package so people can make informed choices as to which package they want to pay for.

    Hey guys,

So we're getting NTL and I had to transcribe that godawful list. It's below. Be careful, however, because a higher cost doesn't necessarily mean "all those channels from the lower list plus more!". For instance, DAVE appears in the cheapest and the most expensive (Value and Max, respectively, at €20 and €32 respectively) lists but not the medium. I've tried to stick to the order they have on the site if you want to cross-reference but they don't make it easy.

Frankly, I think the way they structure the channel offers (such as the whole DAVE example above and the fact that they'll often offer crappier derivatives of channels - such as National Geographic Wild - before offering the actual main channel i.e. National Geographic at a higher price) makes them a bunch of rip-off merchants. But alas I can't get Sky Plus where I am. And after all that groundwork Kelly Brook put in...

Afraid you're wrong about that DAVE example, although it is the website's fault rather than yours. Checked with my buddy in UPC, and DAVE is available in Select as well, it's just an error. The way UPC structure their packs is that if a channel is available in a lower pack, it is also available in the packs above it.
For example, if Dave is available in Value, it is also by default available in Select and Max.

Just as regards Choice, this was the MMDS equivalent of the Max pack . However, they've since rebranded that as Max, so the Max line-up on the website is valid. However, you'll notice the caveat about "The number of channels per pack may vary depending on your geographical location", so you may not get all the channels in that list if you're in MMDS. I'll ask my mate and see what the deal is.

Dave wasn't on select recently I know this as my girlfriend didn't have it. Last week she did, I don't know if they've added it or if it's temporary or what.

Are you MMDS, we are Digital Max out here in Connemara, but no UK-Drama (or alibi or what ever) and so SciFi.

The full list only applies to cable, us poor MMDS pay the same, get less..

I'm moving house soon. The new house has a MMDS aerial on the roof. When I do the check on UPC website, I get Digital TV and PVR (snif no broadband...).
Question is: Can you get Digital package even if you get it from an MMDS aerial?
I thought that was reserved to analogue...
About Dave on Value and Max but not Select, how could that be possible?

Yes, none of those lists appear up to date. Wikipedia has paramount +1 listed, but no "rock on tv", formerly known as mainstreet, formerly known as performance, always known as crap!

Do chorus cable in dublin get the same as NTL cable?

Yes, digital MMDS exists, I think analogue is gone. It's possible because they choose what to broadcast on each package.

Thanks for your answer. It's kinda ironic that the package is called "Select", and they didn't pick Dave...not that I couldn't live without it :D

Analogue is gone in NTL franchise areas. Chorus areas are having more trouble phasing it out.

There has always been a "very basic" pack on NTL digital MMDS (Go Digital Choice I think it was called, UPC seem to have no information on MMDS any more on their website) which basically was just the analogue cable channels in digital format, priced at the same price as the analgoue MMDS service. The reason for its existance was, as I recall, to facilitate the very quick switchover from 100% analogue to 100% digital in NTL MMDS areas among people who didn't want to pay extra for more channels.

Chorus Digital MMDS is a different beast to the NTL package, and is still essentially the old Chorus Digital product, unlike the cable product which has been brought into line with NTL.

So, slightly unrelated but possibly a nice litmus test of NTL and probably the shape of customer service things to come....

They went to my old house to install everything.

Bless, NTL's just like your big slow cousin, isn't it?
