Did your training prepare you?

Now that the Dublin marathon is over and all thoughts are on what's next, I think it'd be interesting to hear from participants on how they faired in the run after their training, while the memories are still fresh.

What was your longest run before the marathon, how many times did you do it and was it enough?

Did you train at 1 minute slower mile pace than your planned race pace and did you actually run faster on the day than in training?

Did you train in the correct terrain? Was all your training on parkland or on a running track or a threadmill, and how did it compare to the big run?

    etc etc...

I've never done the Dublin Marathon, but have run marathons in London, New York, and Seattle and - in my opinion - good preparation is key. It's all about putting in plenty of long runs, being used to being on your feet for a long time, eating the right food, not drinking, and getting the miles under your belt whilst still keeping injury free.

Well done everyone who completed it. How did you all get on?

Excellent question Clum. Maybe we can learn from each other
I agree preperation is the key. If you remain injury free and stick to your training plan then marathon day should be ok.

    See my detail
First marathon for me. Tried to keep my long runs at least 60 secs slower than MP, but all my long runs were ran at comfortable pace

Peak week milage = 38 miles. MP = 7:35. Completed marathon in 3:14

    Week -1 = 11 miles. 3 runs
    Week -2 = 19 miles. 3 runs at MP. Longest run = 10 miles
Week -3 = 31 miiles. 4 runs. Longest runs = 16 miles - 25 secs slower than MP. 3 other runs at MP
Week -4 = 36.5 miles. 4 runs. Longest run (mountain run) 21.3 miles - 18 secs slower than MP. 3 runs at MP
    Week -5 = 38 miles. 4 runs. Longest run = 20 miles - 8 secs slower than MP. 3 runs at MP
Week -6 = 22 miles. 3 runs. Longest run = Phoenix Park half marathon (1:31). 3 runs at MP
    Week -7 = 35 miles. 4 runs. Longest run = 18 miles - 21 secs slower than MP. 3 runs at MP
    Week -8 = 22 miles. 3 runs. Holidays Cyprus - too hot!
    Week -9 = 28 miles. 3 runs. Longest run = 16 miles - 15 secs slower than MP. 3 runs at MP

    My first marathon too.
Followed the HH plan. Did all the long runs, increasing one of the 20s to a 22.
    Next time, I'll do a 24.
Did most of the shorther runs. Did not focus too much on pace.
Ran at least 4 times a week.
Tried to keep the long runs to ~8min miles and on the day did ~7:30 min miles.
Goal was 3:30 and got in well under that so happy with that.

I'm thinking of what I'd have to do to get in uder 3 hours for my next one, or if shaving off 20mins is too big an ask.

I feel the training went well and stood me well, but the last 4 miles I faded. That cost me at least 5 mins. But I did run faster for longer than any of my training runs so to be expected?

All my training was on concrete. Did ~500 miles in the last 20 weeks. Next time will focus more on tempo runs, fartleks, & hill work. That last hill at roebuck wiped me.

Off now to get new runners and get back to it after this weekend.
