360 or PS3

Hi lads, I'm sure this has been done to death before but here goes.

Birthday coming up and the missus wants to get me something nice, I can't decide between the ps3 or the Xbox 360.

The xbox has the media centre extender option which seems like a nice addition, any idea how much this costs? Does it output a component video or just composite?

Does the Ps3 have any music streaming facility from a pc? If so does the GUI look well.

Games wise I love First person shooters and driving games(COD, HALO, MGS, splinter cell etc) there doesn't seem to be too many available for the ps3, if metal gear solid was available at this stage I reckon it would be a no brainer, but it keeps getting delayed.

Any comments about either of them that you might think are useful would be appreciated.

Also there are loads of variations of each 40GB drive one controller etc, which packs are the ones to go for (put it another way, are there any essential extras that I need to know about)

Price drops, are there any on the horizon, looks like the PS3 had one recently, are there any more on the way that anyone knows of?

    Thanks for your help,:)

The only must have accessory for a PS3 is an Xbox

But really, if you're into FPS your best bet is the xbox (Gears/ Bioshock/ Halo/ Orange Box), the controller lends itself better to those type of games, and has a much larger library for FPS, and quite a few aren't going to appear on PS3.

If you were more into PES etc, I'd go for the PS3 for the controller argument again. I've got Motorstorm and Resistance myself but find I only play Forza and Halo.

The media center extender isn't great as it doesn't recognise most of the popular codecs. There is a way to get them running using Orb but I haven't tried this as my media center and 360 use the same TV! TV works fine through the extender if you are watching the same channel (unless your media center has multiple tv cards), pics and music stream good. Had some issues playing content from my NAS server but a few registry tweaks on the media center sorted that out. Output is via composite, vga or HDMI (newer models only, will be displayed on the box)

360 has an excellent catalogue of games and from the few you mentioned you definitely wouldn't be disappointed.

I haven't played with the PS3 yet due to lack of content. The games should start appearing within the next year.

As it currently stands I would say 360 is the better option due to the games you like but if you are more into the media side of things then maybe the PS3 might be a better option as it has blu-ray and will soon have integrated tv via the new dvb-t tuner.

OP, loads of recent posts in both PS3 and Games fora over the last week
debating the same question you raised. Have a look at the posts or do a
    search.

As an owner of both, get the 360 for all the reasons detailed in the other

Okay, I had a PS 1. then PS2 and decision time came. PS2 is still working (Touch wood) and my boys are asking Santa for a Wii. I have looked at teh XBox and decided there was just too much money to dump the console, all the games and start again, good and all as the deals were. I also read horrific reports about XBox reliability ( 1 in 4 being the figure I saw). I also loving watching movies, as does the missus. When the price drop came in recently, it was Birthday time. Best decision I have made.

Blu-Ray movies look amazing on LCD. Upscales ordinary DVD beautifully too - much better than my standalone DVD player/upscaler.
The games such as Resistance, Tiger and Formula 1 look and play really well. The online experience is great and FREE!!!! I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I enjoy the different experiences with the online capabilities.
Ones coming up like MGS and GT are what i want to play. PES is a serious disappointment as the previous ones were so good, but I'm trusting Konami that they will patch it to get it back right.

X-Box looked really nice on LCD too, but when I added in the cost of HD player etc it came to PS3 price anyway. The PS3 won't really come into its own for probably 12 months anyway as developers get to grips with it, but its good enough for me at the moment, especially as I can use my PS2 games in the comfort of my front room.

    Its a tough choice - I don't envy you.:D:D

read here for some (more) interesting malarky on the issue which has been done to death.

In the end, games talk. 360 has better games simple as :)

OP I had the same question as you recently and I went for the PS3.

I would be the same as you into my FPS's. The reason I went for the PS3 was because I needed a dvd player and I needed wireless. I wouldn't be a gamer at all really just enjoy it. I would never consider buying the two. I was told on this site that the PS3 would be more future proof and more than likely had a longer life, plus it is better build. Majority of games will appear on both machines with the exception of a few. The XBox is out longer so the games for it are bound to be more developed. The PS3 is meant to come into it's own in the next year or so.

    This thread helped me.

    Yes and yes.

If you like FPS and TPS (third person shooters), on PS3 right now I'd have a look at Resistance, Warhawk, GRAW2, Rainbow Six Vegas, maybe The Darkness - coming in the next month or so, there's COD4 (which looks amazing), The Orange Box, Haze..and you should have UT3 coming in the not too distant future, though maybe not this year. Ratchet & Clank is excellent, and has shooter elements (platformer/shooter), but it may not be your style. Next year some highlights might be MGS4, Killzone 2, iD's next game, and maybe even Resistance 2 (though that'll probably be 09).

In terms of racers..Motorstorm, Sega Rally, DiRT would be your best bets for now. Perhaps the F1 game if you like that. And the GT Prologue demo for a taste of that.

Doubt there'll be any more price drops this year, but there may be better bundles and packs a little closer to Xmas.

Maybe all these topics should be merged and stickied in "The 360 vs PS3 debate thread"

Right now price wise the PS3 looks more appealing but the 360 has a better selection of games at the moment.

If you're looking for shooters I'd definately go for the 360. GRAW2, Rainbow Six Vegas, The Darkness, The Orange Box, Bioshock, Halo 3, Gears of War all out now with COD4, Kane & Lynch : Dead Men coming very soon and Unreal Tournament due next year. Plenty of racers too, Forza 2, Project Gotham Racing 4, Flatout, Sega Rally, Colin McRae: DIRT and Burnout 5 due next year.

There's the games such as Halo (one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time, you might have heard of it), Bioshock (one of the highest rated games of all time according to metacritic), Gears of War (numerous game of the year awards).

I would almost use Orange Box and Rainbow 6 as examples seeing as they're not released on PS3 for up to six months after the release of the 360 version.

I have the PS3 and I think it's a much better Blu ray player than the 360 ;) , I'm just saying that the 360 is a better console for what the OP asked for, (FPS). When Gran Turismo and MGS are (eventually) launched, I'm sure they'll beat anything of the same genre on the 360.

I forgot this game - if third person shooters float you boat, you should keep an eye out for Uncharted in December.

    1065_0002.jpg

    Trailer here: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27290.html

Gameplay wise it looks like a pretty nice blend of Gears of War, Resident Evil 4 and Tomb Raider .. and it has the best graphics, this side of Crysis at least.

All of these, bar two are three, are on PS3 or coming to it. I say two or three, depending on Bioshock...Irrational are looking for a PS3 programmer at the moment, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a port of it next year.

I think if you're into third person and first person shooters, a mix of the PS3's exclusives and upcoming exclusives compares well against the remaining couple of 360 exclusives in that list. Resistance is an excellent FPS, particularly in multiplayer, and the franchise still likely has its best days ahead in the sequel. Warhawk is a great online battlefield style game, Uncharted looks amazing for something more GoW-like, there's the promise of Killzone 2 next year (jury's out, but it does look great), and you'll probably have a more comprehensive version of UT3 on PS3. And of course, there's MGS4. SOCOM perhaps too (hopefully a 'full' new one next year).

Thanks lads for all the input, I have been reading up a fair bit today about the 2 of them, the Xbox Media centre extender was a real selling point for me as it would save having to move the pc, but as someone mentioned, the pic quality isn't great and it wont recognise all the codecs, so it's a nono.

I have looked at some of the games available for the PS3 and GT5 looks amazing as does COD4, I think deep down if I went for the xbox once MGS4 is realeased I would kick myself, considering I bought the PS1 for MGS1 only (never bought another game for it!) best game I've ever played.

Are there any good offers available for the PS3 anywhere at the moment, or are there any good bundles for sale?

    Thanks for all your advice.

Where did you get the misinformation about poor video playback via a media
extender on the 360? I've streamed media to both consoles and the 360
is far better. Have a look at tversity.com, it lets you stream most codecs
to your 360 from the PC/laptop via your home network. I can stream higher
definition videos to the 360 than I can to the PS3. The PS3 is more
restricted codec wise and poorer quality than a 360 with tversity.

I too went through this conundrum and decided on a PS3 last Monday. And it's great.

    Although the games I want aren't out yet - COD4, GT5, GTA4.

The genres I like (racing and FPS - none of this soccer or wizards lark) are probably more plentiful on the 360, I took the view that if I got a 360 I'd regret it in 12 months time and would probably buy a PS3 at that point anyway.

Difficult decisions in the past 100 years.

Serbian dude, shoot Duke Ferdiand or not.
Truman, drop 1st nuke or invade.
Nixon, pull out of Vietnam or bring in more forces.

    Ps3 or Xbox 360.

I think this depends on your own setup. My PC streaming stuff to the PS3 has been fine resolution and codec-wise (transcoding has been fine on my PC). The PS3 has local playback of more media types also, and a much nicer UI IMO, and better UI integration (on 360 it's like launching a seperate application), + you can copy things to your Ps3 HDD from your PC directly via the DLNA server, unlike on 360 IIRC.

Screw streaming, just convert it with Ps3 video 9 to 720p or higher.

If you go to the front page of www.eurogamer.net you will see they have two articles called the 'twelve games of christmas' - one for PS3 and one for 360, each nominating what they feel is the 12 best games for each system.

It's interesting to see that 7 of the 360s best 12 games are also on PS3 (8 once Eternal Sonata comes out after Christmas), while only 4 of the best PS3 games are available on 360 (5 when UT3 eventually reaches the 360)

The 360 exclusives include two FPS games, one racer and one western RPG. The PS3 exclusives include a 3D platformer, a 2D platformer, an action/adventure, an FPS, a multiplayer only 3rd person shooter, a karaoke game and a card strategy game.

It's just one website's opinion of course but it's one I tend to agree with, especially given the greater variety of genres on PS3, which is why it baffles me how often people claim the PS3 has no games and the 360 is superior.

.......................most of those games arent out, yes most of them are out this month, but up until now theres hardly being anything worth playing on the ps3. And even then, who knows how good these games will turn out. Right now is a good time to get a ps3 but your kidding yourself if you thought it was value for money before now. Mine has being collecting dust since May.

I dont understand the hassle ppl go to, to stream to their console and have their pc on at the same time

Mod an xbox or connect your pc to your hdtv, it'll be cheaper than wasting money have both the ps3 and pc on at the same time.

Fair enough point although there is a good chance that Haze will end up on the 360 as well (even the article you refer to eludes to this). Also might be worth mentioning that the two FPS exlusives are both 10/10 games on eurogamer;) In saying that I think Ratchet and Clank looks quite tasty. Not too sure about the other PS3 exlusives though.

Thanks again lads for all the input. I had a lenghty chat over a few pints last night with my mates, we all finally agreed on the PS3 as the built in Blu-ray dvd player is great and it seems to be the console with the most potential, most importantly though when MGS4 comes out I wont break down in tears like I would if I went for the 360.

Looking forward to COD4, GT5 and MSG4 (if they ever release it) UT & resistance fall of man looks fairly good too.

Funny comment earlier about the most important decisions ever made by man:D

Are there any games on the PS3 that can take those guns you used to be able to get for the PS1 & 2? Time crisis? the arcade version always had a gun.

I find it far more hassel getting vids to work on my PS3 then Xbox, but then again I might be just set in my ways!!:D

I do enjoy the Bluray Videos on my PS3, and it is not as noisy as playing HD-DVD's on my 360, but with the surround sound on I can't hear either of them anyway.

Can't wait for the PS3 game library to expand, all my one does all day is run Folding@Home. Warhawk is the only gameso far to impress me, Resistance was just completly boreing, and I just got fed up with it.

Incase the OP is still debating, I would recommend the 360 above the PS3 to anyone. Also I can't stand using the PS3 controllers, talk about hand crampingly bad design, espicelly with the new L2 and R2 'triggers', anyone have any reomendations for any other PS3 compatable controllers?

If you dont own either, there is plenty of content on the ps3, if you own a xbox i wouldnt bother buying a ps3 just yet.

    Oblivion
    Rainbow 6
Warhawk (online only, but works flawsly even with crap broadband)
    Ninja Gaiden Sigma
are all great games and will be enough to keep you going untill christmas when more nice games come out!

Dont buy ps3 if you dont have a HD tv.

At least 6nof the PS£ onmes will be crap though, 360 has a much, much better line up now and planned for the next while at least so I wouldn't consider this other posters comments above. I have 360 and I will get a PS3 when it's worthwhile, went to get one before but very bad value I think given priice and games line up, if games were better price isn't an issue.

Well my missus got the 60Gb today, 2 controllers, Resistance FOM and Ridge racer for E499. Seems to be the same price everywhere

Does that come with a HD cable? I haven't seen the box yet as it's a 'surprise' for my bday. My Plasma has 2 spare component inputs, the VGA & HDMI are already taken up, do I have to buy a video cable specifically for Component or is it all included?

Hey, she got it in Smyths toystore.

Can you get a HD cable the has component connectors on it instead of HDMI?

Anyone played RFOM? Is it any good? It looks great.

I have both machines and i would say they are both great.
when it comes to value and price the ps3 wins for me.
As for the amount af games to play the xbox wins there.
But the ps3 is much faster, has loads of memory card slots, fibre optic, blu ray,
    free online.

I could go on and on about both machines but the one to get for the future is the ps3.

The hdmi cable is the one to get if your tv can handle 1080p,
if not the component cable will output 1080i.

    What is RFOM?

I have both machines and i would say they are both great.
when it comes to value and price the ps3 wins for me.
As for the amount af games to play the xbox wins there.
But the ps3 is much faster, has loads of memory card slots, fibre optic, blu ray,
    free online.

I could go on and on about both machines but the one to get for the future is the ps3.

The hdmi cable is the one to get if your tv can handle 1080p,
if not the component cable will output 1080i.

    What is RFOM?

Hey, RFOM - resistance fall of man, sorry I presumed thats what every one calls it.

My 42" is 1080i only, and my sky HD box is hogging the HDMI input at the moment. Can I get a PS3 component cable? I have 2 spare ones.

Unfortunatly I have to wait 2 weeks before I can open it.

Does anyone know are there any games that you can use a gun?
