Once... released in America, not Ireland?

Oh Glen, why aren't you releasing it here? Once is being released in the States in December, but there's not even a sign of a Euro release, and certainly not an Irish one... Anyone have any better details?

Was it not out over here months and months ago?

I know I saw it at the Dublin Film Festival, but I distinctly remember a significant poster campaign around the city about a month or so after that which would indicate it went on general release.

It only got a cinema release in the UK about 2 weeks ago so releasing a Region 2 DVD would be a disaster. It won't be released here for another few months at least.

It was out here first shown over the summer for a good while, i went to see it in Dundrum. Seems now that its getting "acclaim" abroad irish people are waking up to it, too bad you missed it!

Glen Hansard is really really annoying though.

It was out here ages ago - you missed out! You're only looking for it now because you're aware of it due to its acclaim abroad, but it was here first and nobody bothered to see it (as usual with an Irish movie - there were a few articles written to this effect). And it's already out in the US in limited release.

Now it should maybe be re-released and it could do better second time around, now that it's okay to like an Irish movie :p

Au contraire my friend. I saw it when it was in cinemas here, and I've been eagerly awaiting the DVD release. I just don't want to order it from America if it's going to be coming here shortly after. Seems a shame still that they would get first release...

So you meant the DVD release - ahhh! That makes more sense! Well then you're completely right to wonder why it's not being released here, especially when the likes of RTE release any old tat. I guess it's still down to the fact we showed no interest and the small market here - I'm led to believe "I Went Down" never came out on R2 either.

Apparently the American critics love it and its an unexpected indie hit.

People only want to see it now because of its reception in the States.

Will all future Irish movies need to be released across the Atlantic first before getting a screening here because homegrown audiences are too dumb to decide themselves on our movies' merits?

The esteemed Irish Film And Television Academy also ignored Once by failing to nominate it for Best Picture earlier this year.

Instead box-office duds such as The Front Line, Middletown, and Small Engine Repair were nominated.

Once received one nomination - in the Best Music category.

Yes I think it was out around June. I saw it in Limerick. To be fair though it wasn't shown in the vast majority of cinemas around the country, it wasn't shown anywhere in the north-west (where I live).

    Confused...
I saw this in the cinema here in Ireland months back. Nice film it is too though not brilliant and at times felt like a bit of a showcase for the Frames or Hansard himself. Quite reminded me of Before Sunrise in its camera work etc. Love the fact that the female lead was played by an immigrant plucked from obsurity whilst busking in Dublin, if this is indeed true.

Nah... she was an established artist in Prague. That's where Hansard met her.

Her songs were much better than his ones which were all the a bit samey and whiny... the film would have benefited from having more of her material in it.

Once had a cinema release at the Eye in Galway city.
