Tiger + NAS problems

I've got a 1 terabyte 'Jack in the Box' RAID 0 NAS connected to my wireless router via ethernet cable. I've a macbook running Tiger 10.4.10 connected to the same router wirelessly.

I can connect to the NAS with my web browser, and I've checked to ensure Samba server is enabled.

However, when I try to connect to the server via Finder (go>connect to server) I can enter my username & password, but then it just hangs on the progress bar 'Connecting to server'. Occasionally it will seem to connect, but almost instanteously dismounts.

Any ideas on what's up? Is it just a case that Finder is crap handling SMB servers? Are there alternatives?

i connect to SMB servers wirelessly all the time, without major hiccups. This is a strange one, could you borrow another router and try it with that? Maybe make sure firmwares are upto date on the router and NAS box.

I also connect to a NAS from Tiger 10.4.10 without any problems.
When you connect using Go -> connect to server, what do you put in the server address box ? - you might need to specify that you are connecting to a samba server rather than an afp server - i.e. put in smb://xx.xx.xx.xx where xx.xx.xx.xx is your NAS IP address.

Yep, I put in smb://ip.ad.dr.ess, it asks to select the Share I want to access and to authenticate, and once that done it tries to connect, but doesnt get passed the progress bar.

It's a strange one. If I enter a wrong password, it will respond to let me know - so it's obviously connecting to the SMB server. I've found a few links on the interweb that reckon it might be something to do with the handling of encrypted passwords and so on, so I'll have another bash at it!
