Health & Safety - Risk Assesment

Eventually I would like to be able to consult as a risk assessor, and would like to obviously have a decent qualification behind me.

Has anyone completed a relevant course, or has work sent you on a course? I have seen 6 -10 week courses in Occupational Health & Safety but I can nearly guarantee that I'll need more than that i.e. a diploma or degree.

    All help appreciated!

You must be quite careful re the quality of courses offered in Health and Safety. Many are purely introductory courses and are of little value. Go on the ucd website and see if you can access the Centre for Industry and Commerce. They run a certificate, diploma and degree course. They also outsource some of their certificate courses to local colleges. See if any course you see elsewhere is recognised by NIOSH which is the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. There used to be a lot of courses around that were only of value to someone who wanted a grounding in H and S but if you want a career you will need at least a diploma.

My dad's the health and safety manager for a company and I know he did a part-time diploma in UCD to get the required qualification. I'll try and find out which was the course he did.

NUIG do a part-time Post Graduate H.Dip in Health and Safety and AIT do a part time Diploma (I think) course in Environmental Health and Safety.
