Notice Period

Asking this one on behalf of someone else:

The minimum notice period, by law, is one week unless stated otherwise in a contract. What's going on here though is that the contract says the period is "XXXX weeks notice"... As in literally XXXX - someone didn't put in the details into the contract.

Now given this is not in any way a legal amount of time, does the responsibility fall solely on the employer for screwing up and thus making it a period of one week's notice?

sounds like it alright, but if there was a standard of one month in the company I'd give a month myself. They aren't going to sue you either way but why not give them at least the notice you would expect imo.

Dounds odd, alright. Funny if someone did this, though:
    Dear sir,
I'm giving you XXXX weeks notice of my leaving (as stated in the contract. Thus tomorrow week is my last day. Goodbye.

    Yours,
    Me

Depends how much they like the company, and how long the next company will wait. Current job is 4 weeks, or something, but only if you want a reference. Otherwise it's "goodbye", as I've seen a few people do (they were going to give 2 weeks notice, was told this wasn't enough, etc, have to do 4 weeks, etc. Person quit on the spot "fúck you").

That's what I suggested to him - he said, from noticing previous employers, that there's a standard of two weeks and that he'd work towards that so as to leave on favourable terms.

Pretty sloppy work on the part of HR! And it ain't no small-fry company either.

I'd read that as forty weeks notice.

Nah, that'd be XL under standard Roman notation right? Which would make it a T-shirt size...

It would, but I wouldn't expect HR staff to know that. :p

I'd go with the company's standard notice period and/or a chat with HR about it.
