Well, SBG was based in Phibsboro until 2004(?). Maybe that's it?

    Ahhh, the shed.

KO martial arts is just down the road from Phibsborough though.

Where is KO Martial Arts? I'd be interested in training in Phibsborough if possible.

In light of legal proceedings issued by MAI

We can no longer discuss MAI, it's websites, it's instructors or training.

    Sorry guys,
    Colm

They're not in Phibsborough, and I'd say your post is going to be deleted now anyway. See the sticky on the top of the forum.

Yes we are near phibsboro as the map shows. The busses are regular enough and leave you around the corner from the gym. Turns out I was directing people wrong from Phibsboro and one of the lads told me recently you're better off grabbing a bus that goes through Cabra and drops you on the Ratoath Road or Nephin Road and then the gym is just a short walk over the railway lines. I'm brutal when it comes to public transport!

Just a beware to anyone looking for BJJ. I've noticed lately that there are an awful lot of gyms advertising BJJ in the likes of Irish Fighter. Now obviously I can't name names or anything but I only know of (off the top of my head) 6 places in Dublin that are either qualified or affiliated to a BJJ org and hence able to say they do actual BJJ classes, as opposed to watching a few DVDs and teaching it. Rathcoole, Baldoyle, Loughlinstown, Tallaght, Fairview/Swords, Glasnevin. Apologies if I missed anyone there I'm just trying to give an example.

Unfortunately, at the moment it's buyer beware when it comes to MMA and BJJ.

    True Barry.

And for that buyer the best way of sussing out a BJJ gym is asking if they compete in the National Submission Championships or in the Irish BJJ open. Generally a BJJ club/gym will have a pro-competition attitude.

So ask here about a coach and people here should be able to vouch for someone.

True, but as far as I know Defendu in Swords and Fairview have no competitors, but they have 3 or 4 blue belts and most certainly do BJJ! But competition is a good ready reckoner.

True Barry though they are the exception. I don't know of a single other "Real" BJJ school that doesn't compete.

I normally train with Ray Butcher at Fairview, but it's just I heard there was a bloke doing it in Phibsboro boxing club on Sundays at 4.00 and wanted to check it out here. I rang a no. of a bloke involved in Phibsboro boxing club and he said he could'nt say yes or no, but a " kickboxing or Karate club" might use it from time to time. But as you say, it's "it's buyer beware".

I was driving through phisboro and the gym on the 1st floor of the shopping centre with eddie rockets and tesco in it has advertising for aikido and kickboxing.

5 blue belts now.....and no competitors YET!!! :D

We would have had a few guys in the BJJ Open this year but the club was heading off to the states to train the next week...

probably didn't want to risk an injury which is as good a reason as any

Exactly.... nothing worse than forking out a fortune to go away and train and then ending up watching everyone roll from the bench because you're injured... exactly what I had to do :(
