    Hey...

Planning on going up to Dublin sometime in December for a bit of Christmas shopping. Does anybody know of any good bargains for a one night stay in a good enough hotel near the city center? Not driving up so public transport is a requirement for this one!

    Thanks.

The new Comfort Inn on Parnell Sq. has rooms from €89, and for something a little cheaper the likes of the Days Hotel in Ballymun or the Ardmore in Finglas are about 10-20 less depending on the day... you'd have to get a bus or taxi in and out of town, though, which could be a pain with shopping.

If you're not too fussy the Gate Hotel in Parnell St. is ideal location wise and price wise. Its only about 100 yards off the top of O'Connell Street and they have a secure car park out the back.

Its basically a glorified B & B with a small bar counter for service only. If I recall correctly you can get bottled beer and spirits - no pints and no meals either apart from breakfast.

I dont know how they are classified but I would say its something around a 2 star hotel. If you cant get a number for them PM me and I would have one here somewhere.

Edit: Here you go. Forgot to add its probably the cheapest (or it was the last time I stayed there)

you couldn't pick a cheaper time to stay anywhere in Ireland.

Try the following links and remember it's always cheaper to stay on a weekday. I also recommend late availabilty ( at least 2 days before you intend to go) at this time of year as hotels are empty and will compete on last minute prices. ( btw I work in the industry)

Just back from a fabulous 2 day stay in the radisson, Cavan for half normal price. Not something I would do in the mid or high season.

They've reopened Jurys in Ballsbridge as a dicount 5 star hotel. Flat fee of 105 a night or something. Think its d4hotels.com.

Well the hotel looks horrible from the outside, but only from an architectural point of view... not heard anything about it inside!

I aint looked up reviews, and im only going on a review by two americans who hated the place (AA booked them in, but after the complaint I believe AA may consider not promoting the hotel anymore). Plus, its in a rough spot of Dublin. Puts me of staying in such a place.

Ah right - as I said, heard nothing about it so can't say anything in that regard.

The area can be rough alright, but the hotel's in an OK spot and wouldn't be an issue if you're only going to use it to sleep... if you're looking for somewhere where you can drop into a local or go for a wander at a whim it's certainly not ideal!

Booking this for around the 18th of December. Will be getting 4 Rooms, 8 People.

Stuck between d4 Hotels (nothing about them being Jurys though) and Comfort Inn. Decisions decisions!

No parking in Parnell Square, big drawback in my opinion.

I've not stayed in any hotel on Harcourt St. but I hear that some (if not all) can be a pain if you're looking to get a good night's sleep on the weekend - all the toe-rags pouring out of Copper's and D2 etc.!

Seem to be fine otherwise and a decent price too

I'd recommend Bewleys Hotel in Ballsbridge. It's a lovely hotel, in it's own grounds. The location is great but quite and with a touch of class. €109 for a room, without breakfast. There's a super restaurant there called O'Connells should you want a decent evening meal without leaving the hotel on cold December nights. Plenty of buses pass the hotel into the city, alternatively it's about a 15 min (reasonably safe) walk into the city. Parking available.

A friend of mine stayed in the Ashling hotel by Euston station. Said it was clean and comfortable, nice staff and dead handy for everywhere as near the Luas.

Stayed there Tuesday night. We were in the "new building" which was really the old building! We booked 4 rooms - 2 Doubles, 1 Quad and 1 Twin. We got a double, 2 Quads and a twin in the end :p

The double was small and basic, but clean and cosey. Bathroom was tiny, but it was clean with a very nice shower! They gave us a double and single but its standard. We lover looked the back of the hotel. We could hear anyone using the toilet above us, and also doors closing in the rooms surrounding us. **** TV, as in the colour was awful. Remote didnt work and nor did the iron.

One quad was very spacious, had a projector screen to. Not much furniture, and most of the beds were broken - but they didnt come up and fix em, so we just ignored it. Nice size bathroom, with a bath. Overlooked Harcourt Street which was very noisy as the residents bar / D4 had been booked for a UCD function. If you were planning on going to bed early - no chance. Students were noisy and in large numbers, causing grief for the Luas who could never pass by without problems. But everyone went to bed late, so it was quiet when we crashed. Cleaners came early, as they had no "Do not disturb sign".

Other quad not so spacious, but still good. Located at the basement level, wasnt that noisy and overlooked at the back of the hotel. Cleaners came early, as they had no "Do not disturb sign". In the end, the blocked the door with a chair as they wouldnt stop entering.

Twin was larger then the double, but a very nice size with a nice sized bathroom.

Overall:- Looking for a hotel around the scale of what Jurys offer, stay away. Its just to basic and old. Nothing compared to what normally offered in hotels. Heck, B&Bs offered more! But, its nice and cosy if you want somewhere to sleep for the night at a budget price. Very well located, top of Grafton Street with the green line luas located outside. Its beside the Garda HQ and Department of Foreign Affairs.

Just bare in mind, the rooms are not sound proof - not even a brick wall. So if your noisy, then you will piss of people around you. Or, they might piss you off. We kept hearing them flushing the toilet and running the bath. :p Our neighbours were coming in and out so we can hear there doors closing, so if your easily woken - bad hotel.

If I was going again, id probably stay here again. Its idealy located beside shops and clubs. Its at a great price, and its clean and comfortable. Thats all that matters to me. Saying that, I might stay out by the RDS - those D4 hotels look very nice and we were told by a taxi they are very popular!
