Scared for my safety

I moved into a new flat 9 months ago I loved it, it was the perfect place, a week after I moved in a letter came(not stamped hand delivered) for the previous tenant so I gave it down to the auctioneer when I was paying the rent. Over the next week a letter came every day so I kept giving them down to the auctioneer. Then the auctioneer told me not to drop them down anymore as he’s no contact details for the old tenant and to just throw the letters in the bin.

Thought that was odd but I did that even though there were letters coming everyday they were always there at 8.30am in my postbox when id go to work(even came at weekends)

Anyway I had to go to Cork for the weekend for work so hadn’t checked my postbox from Friday- Monday, anyway came back to find this time a letter had been shoved under my door (same writing/envelope as the other letters) only this time it said”The occupant”- I opened it as I didn’t even release it was the same writing I assumed it was from one of my neighbors or something.

    This was the letter

    Chris (Not me)
“Seen as you’re ignoring all my letters and calls ive decided to hand this over to someone more professional. You had your chance to pay me back your money and you do a runner- but I know your still in that flat even though you have moved some bitch in to make it look like you have moved out”(I assumed he meant me)
“You call me and arrange payment or expect a visit real soon”

Now at this stage I freaked out and called the mobile number on the letter and told the person on the other line I had no idea what he’s on about I moved in here months before and if he wanted I would show him my tenancy agreement as proof (I was scared no idea why I felt id to prove anything though) All I got was “You must think I’m stupid, You’ll pay too bitch”

I called the cops and they have the letter and the mobile number now, and I moved to a new flat on the other side of town out of pure paranoia

    And things were fine

Then this morning a WREATH was delivered to my door and the card inside said “RIP SEE YOU VERY SOON”

I’m losing my life! The police said ive no proof who it’s from and they can’t do anything

    Quite dramatic.

I'd have a word with a solicitor if I were you to get the Garda to act a bit more strongly.

    I'm thinking elaborate wind up.

OMG that's very creepy - did you tell the auctioneer about the wreath etc... maybe you could ask them to contact the previous tenant. Surely someone owes you some kind of duty of care here?

The Gardaí will be able to help you deal with this way better than random strangers on the interweb.

Seeing as you have the number perhaps you can get the Garda to listen in/ record the conversation and ring again?
Threatning to kill someone could be conspiracy to cause bodily harm?
Garda should be able to get info from the phone company.

lol, is that not an oxymoron?

I think threatening to kill someone is against the law entirely on its own.

OP, have you asked the gardai what action they have taken against the first threat?

And with regards to the wreath, who delivered it? A flower company?

Probably the most interesting PI I've read in a long time.

    Straight to the gardaí OP.

As above, can you identify the shop where this wreath came from?
That sounds like a first step.

You're being scammed, if someone was watching the flat they'd know he wasn't living there anymore since he'd be seen coming in an out. The idea is to scare you into paying the money that the previous tenent "apparently" owes. If a person was that serious the letters wouldn't be coming that long (9 months), they'd just come in and beat the crap out of you to get his attention and the fact this hasn't happened is what makes me think it's a scam.

Firstly I'd find out if the previous tenent was actually called Chris, if not then it's an opportunist who just seen you move in and thought this up, if it Chris is then I'd look at either the previous tenant, someone in the Auctioneers office (especially if they have a forwarding address for you because to be honest thats the only way someone would be able to find you unless someone was watching you 24 hours a day for nine months which seems unlikely as the expence alone would hardly be worth the effort) or one of your ex neighours (who could easily have seen you move in and move out) .

The fact is that they assumed you'd become curious before you did and open a letter but since you were just binning them they needed to get your attention hense the use of "The Occupant". Ask yourself If it was someone else and they believed he was still there why say "The Occupant"? if they were that pissed off it'd be "The Bitch".

The wreath (although an effecting touch) is out of lazyness, you're to far from where they live to deliver a letter everyday so they had this brainwave (interflora huh?) because again think about it, if someone was watching all day, everyday in the old flat and saw you move then one would assume they would be parked outside the new flat watching again and so could just start delivering the letters again but this hasn't happened, all they can do now is use a delivery service.

If someone actually had the intention of hurting you they'd hardly send you a wreath informing you of the fact because A. the Guards would straight away know it wasn't just a random attack and the investigaton would be alot different and B. If he hired "someone more professional." and he (the mailer) was the cause of that "someone more professional." actually being investigated he'd be next on the list.

I know you are scared but I bet the idea is that you ring out of fear and offer to pay but you can't afford it and then it becomes and "installment" plan but I bet if offer the full amount straight up they'll become flustered and then come up with a rediclous amount (like 10,000) that would hardly warrent that amount of survallence for 9 months. Bring the wreath to the Guards at Harcourt Square, Dublin 2 and ask to talk to the fraud division because that is all this is, it's like a crap internet scam and get advice from there. A fraud officer would investigate the attempt of defrauding you out of money as opposed to an offence that hasn't happend yet (you being attacted) http://www.garda.ie/angarda/gbfi.html

Hope this helps and sorry for the long reply and don't forget you have their number so the Fraud division have somewhere to start also anything else gets delivered don't touch any cards etc attached, just pass it on to them.

You can triangulate people's approximate location via mobile phone too. Or more to the point, the guards can. I'd bring all details to the guards immediately, let them handle ongoing investigations. Whoever it is doesn't sound too smart tbh, they are using an unmasked phone and posting regular letters, which presumably are stamped by an post. The guards have an entire book on how to track down "anonymous" mail. If as another poster pointed out they are watching the flat as well, it will be a fast collar.

It seems quite strange that the actually followed you to your new address. As you said after you read the letter and after you rang the number you were so freaked out that you moved to a flat on the other side of town and that the wreath was sent there. Now how would they know you moved to a new address. They are either watching you which would make me wonder why. Maybe they think you can lead them to that 'Chris'? Or, as someone said here before, they are trying to scam you but why would they go through all the trouble sending a wreath to the latest address? Would be much easier to stick with the next tenant going into your old flat if they are scammers. Or, and this may sound strange, it is someone you know or who knows you playing a very devious trick on you for whatever reason. He/she knew a bout you moving into that flat started sending letters. Of course, he/she also knew about your move to the new address after you got scared by these letters.

Whatever it is I would always inform the gardai about everything that happens.

Have you received anything else after the wreath at the new address?

The police said ive no proof who it’s from and they can’t do anything

But you're not Miss Marple. They have the mobile phone number and letter so surely now its up to them to investigate?

That would be my first instinct too. tbh sounds likes something a bitter old boyfriend would do. If you get no joy from the cops, try asking for help from the local politicians. They might be able to bring pressure to bear. Consider moving in with friends, and perhaps somewhere with CCTV. Did you change your mobile number?

Funny feeling the OP is making this up,

Maybe she should write a crime novel or something.

But in case I am wrong, seriously, take the others advice and get action out of the gardai.

They cant just fob you off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Did you split up with someone just before you moved into the flat? Sounds like a possible ex.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,832 ✭✭✭littlebug

I agree that this is someone who knows you and has a grudge for some reason. They knew you were away for the weekend (thus the letter under the door... knew they wouldn't get caught) and they knew where you'd moved to.

Did the auctioneer know your new address?
Did you ring the number from your mobile? Have you had any phone calls? Male or female voice?

Yup.. someone you know...or else someone from the auctioneers office...
I can't understand the gardai not following it up when you've letters and the phone number. You need to follow this up with them again (if indeed this is all true:confused:)

It sounds like something from Lock Stock. Sorry OP, but if your not making this up, then someone is winding you up. Who would hold a grudge against you personally?

Keep ringing the mobile from different numbers & try & work out who it is.

It's too late but you should of waited for em one arning. Have to say I find it a tad suspicious the guards aren't doing more about this.

Funny, I was looking down through the threads that are still on the first page of PI, noticed this was still here and thought exactly the same thing.

On the off chance its not I think you should just leave it in the hands of the guards. Don't see what else can be done TBH

The Gardai will trace the mobile number through the phone operator....got to your local station and demand to see the sargeant.

well i thought the auctioneer was kinda strange telling you to dump the letters.that dosent sound right! when u moved did you get a new apartment from the same auctioneer??? maybe somebody work for them saw a women living on her own and thought shed be easy to scare. and it would explain how they got your new address.

Whatever you do, DO NOT DEMAND.Think about,if you go down to your local station and say 'what are you going to do about this?I want something done NOW'
then they aren't going to be so eager to help someone who just ****ed them out of it.Just go down,be yourself and just express your fears to them.Making demands will not get you anywhere.

Also, the Gardai are not stupid. If they thought you were in danger they would've given you advice on your personal safety/security and began an investigation immediately. Also, after 9 months and they have not done anything yet??Then nothing is going to happen...
