I was planning on staring a topic this lunch about best Season finalie, if you mean best last episode ever i honnestly dont know that would take a long time to think about...

if its best last episode of a season it is without a doubt Stargate Sg1 Season 6 Full Circle. Or else BSg season 1 episode 13... or bsg season 2 finalie.... or..... no i should stop

End of first season of 24 probably, anyone who's seen it will know the incredible twists and weaves the other 23 episodes have made, the final hour doesn't veer from this path and in fact the plot twists just keep coming.
24 never really bettered it's first season IMO and it was mainly due to poorer plot structure in later seasons I think.

End of season 5 of The Shield, you know the one where
Shane blows up Lemansky in his car because he thinks he about to turn state's evidence
I found it hard to believe that the writers had gone down this road and it really turned the tone of the whole show, left me feeling bad
    for the character who'd died
...to create that kind of empathy in the viewership for a character shows good development over the rest of the series...to go on and
    kill off that developed character
is a very brave move and one which ultimately worked for the show, even though I was pretty annoyed when I initially watched it..

    A fair few S2 finales:

West Wing - For THAT scene in the Church alone. Probably one of the most powerful scenes ever in TV (I'm sure the other Wing fans here will agree).
Alias - I think my jaw actually dropped and then we had that ending
Milennium - An OMGZ ending, if ever there was one. Shame about how it was followed up. Still sends chills down my spine.
    Farscape - S2. Very dark.

The Wire - S4 finale. My heart was uplifted and broken.
    BSG - S1 finale

Buffy did the best one I feel:
seasons 1-5 were all really strong.
Alias seasons 1 and 2 were great too.
Veronica Mars season 1 was to me a perfect example of how to wrap up a year long arc and still make a very tense and pacy episode.
Sex and the City had a great season 5 finale. I just remember loving the setting to it and the overall story.
I can't think of any more off the top of my head! maybe later :)

All the Battlestar Galactica series endings have been excellent!
    Babylon 5 series 3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

Veronica Mars season 1, and Babylon 5 series 3 both got mentions quite rightly, but nothing beats Battlestar season 1 ending imo!

Angel season 1/5 and Dexter also get honourable mentions :D

'Lost - Season 3' was one of the favourite in the last year or two.

'Veronica Mars - Season 1' was good but the penultimate episode (i think) 'A Trip To The Dentist' was just one of the best episodes of telly that year.

I've a few more i'll post later as i'm in a rush to work! ;)

Agreed about the 24 season 1 finale. Fantastic stuff.

I'm a massive fan of Red Dwarf's series 5 finale, "Back to Reality".
Lots of people watching at the time (or watching the episodes in order years later on RTE 2 as I did) honestly thought that the crew had been 'killed' in a virtual reality game called "Red Dwarf". The episode coped with the 'crew' getting used to life back in the 'real world' after four years playing the game. There doesn't seem to be a way out of this mess for them, the series (and perhaps their lives) seems to be fi ished. Fantastic idea.

Can't forget to mention the final scene in "Blackadder goes Forth".

An American SciFi show from a year or two back that was cancelled half way through its first season.
Very last line was: "We're only getting started"
    Brilliant stuff!:D

Agree with the Shield, BSG and Stargate.

    How about:
Farscape Season 4. A real WTF? moment.
    Quantum Leap series finale

Totally agree. Absolutely stunning episode that.

Also loved the Season 1 Alias finale. The whole series had built nicely up to that moment. It just made me excited about the Second season, which was also brilliant.

Like others have mentioned the West Wing Season 2 ender was great. Especially that bit where they are all walking out while "Brothers in Arms" plays on the soundtrack.

The end of Carnivales second season was a good episode, although an earlier episode 2x09 I think stands out to me as being the best Carnivale episode ever. However watching the end of it knowing that we would never get answers to what was going on was agony.

The very last 7 minutes of the very last episode of Six Feet Under wins this, hand down, for me. Just stunning television. If you weren't teary-eyed during that final montage, you have no soul. I doubt I'll ever see a tv show with as good(and satisfying) an ending ever again.

Fully agree with this. The whole final episode itself wasn't brilliant but the closing sequence was the best ending ever.

QFT as the kids say. I actually exclaimed "Oh come on" when seeing it, as my emotions got repeatedly battered, scene after scene.

Agree wholeheartedly. The music in the episode was outstanding too. As mentioned the series finale was great too - definitely the best of the Star Trek series endings.

Although that said I really enjoyed Voyager's "Endgame" as well. DS9 had some memorable cliffhangers too over its run.

Prison Break Season One's ending was great too.

Have to add in my support for the 'Six Feet Under' finale. Just WOW.. in every respect!

The closing montage was just some of the most heart-wrenching stuff i've ever watched. And i've nothing but respect for Alan Ball for probably the most satisfying close to a series i've ever watched. Couldn't have been more perfect. It felt almost cinematic with the operatic music over it.

And the gorgeous music over the final montage was perfect. For those who don't know, it's called 'Breathe Me' by Sia. Just amazing!

'Six Feet Under' was patchy at points during it's 5 seasons. It was mostly an excellent show but the montage in the finale just echoed how much we've grown to appreciate the characters and Alan Ball really created something special. I just wish more people watched it.. as none of my mates ever would take the interest as it's quite an odd and unengaging show for the opening few episodes but no show is worth sticking with more.

Sorry.. rambled a lot but yeah, 'Six Feet Under' is probably the best finale of a show I have ever seen. Not for the episode itself (which was great but their was much much better) but for, as others have said, the perfect montage to end the show.

Saw the first 3[mostly] seasons when More4 showed it last year, loved it, season 3 got bad though, and more4 stopped showing about half way through season 3, never saw the rest, looked the following seasons on wiki though[really regret that now, after all the recommendations here about the finale!].Might check out the dvds from xtravision.

I'l go for the finale of the second series of the wire.
The episode like the series is dominated by a superb acting performance from the lad who plays Nick (Pablo Schreiber) but the final scene where we see him, we know he has lost it all, his uncle and Ziggy are gone partially due to his imcompetance and you fear that things are not going to get better for Nick. Throughout the series you see he is desperate to carve out a better life for him and his girlfriend but sadly he does not have the know how to do it legally. Oh and it features Borris/Serge one of the coolest bad guys in the show. It also sets up season three excellently as well when the police decide to focus on Stringer Bell as they realise he is back in the game.

One of my faves is a faux-finale from last year's Desperate Housewives and they had to write out Bree Hodge due to Marcia Cross' pregnancy. About 8 episodes got crammed into 1 as the series focussed on the who killed Monique storyline.

Of the three Lost seasons, my favourite was the two parter at end of season 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,646 ✭✭✭cooker3

24 season 1, the whole episode was just outstanding
but especially when Jack just smashed through the base in the car and killed everyone rambo style including Victor Drezin and of course the final few minutes. Poor Terri

Also lost season 3 is probably my favourite ending. The final scene was so utterly brilliant and it allows the writers to do so many things, the possibilities are endless.
