How refreshing that the cruel and disgusting practises of hare coursing, fox hunting, and stag hunting are slowly but surely beginning to topple. The campaign to have these abuses of Ireland's wildlife heritage outlawed has gained momentum in recent years...but in recent months we have witnessed a succession of very real victories.

A number of coursing clubs have been suspended or have had their baiting activities cutailed thanks to the initiative of Green Minister Mr. Gormley...this is but a prelude to the total abolition of coursing and its replacement with the humane alternative of drag coursing...in which a mechanical lure is used and no hare gets mauled or terrorised for kicks.

Stag hunting, a vile, stupid, and utterly cruel practise is first in line for humanitarians who fight for animal welfare. The stag hunters are, in a sense, the troops on the beech that everyone knows are going to get blown away...before the really big battle comes...the foxhunters and the game shooters are, shall we say, the SS Panzer Divisions and crack troops further inland...more difficult nuts to crack.

But in time...in time...justice shall prevail. The evil cruelty-worshippers who torment our beautiful wildlife for sick jollies can dig in as deeply as they wish...in the end they face total and ignominious defeat.

Look, sport..real sport..has nothing to do with inflicting deliberate pain on animals and birds for perverted pleasure. It's about fair competition.

Two greyhounds after a hare isn't fair competition...a pack of blood-crazed dogs after a fox isn't fair cometition...an overfed bang bang yahoo loosing off bullrets or pellets at a little bird in a tree..or flying peacefully across an Irish sky...isn't fair competition.

It's the act of sick human beings who, I am sure, will get their comeuppance sooner rather than later. There was never a sadist yet who didn't die roaring, surrounded by visions of the poor creatures he devoted his life to abusing.

Meantime, I await the downfall of the stag hunters...nothing less than their complete and unconditional surrender will be acceptable to the plain people of Ireland.

I raise my stirrup cup in a toast to impending triumph...Hunters are about to be hounded and their credibility torn to pieces.

But sure can't they team up with the shooters and they can all blown their own horns...You don't need to be chasing a stag or a fox to blow your horn lads.

Excuse me now, because I'm putting on my new suit. I'm off to the best stag party Ireland has ever seen.

Cheerio hunters. I'll be thinking of you as I down pints of porter. I'm off to Dublin in the GREEN in the GREEN, as the old song used to say.
