Chimney Flue Question ....

We moved into a new house about 3 years ago and the sitting room has a gas fire installed. Our first winter we used it a lot until we got the gas bill and since then we rarely if ever use it due to the high cots of running it.

At the moment we are thinking of ripping it out and just having an open fire (I know not as clean , but that doesn't really matter ). The question is though, would there be different type of chimney flues installed for a gas fire and an open fire , and if this is the case , is there anyway for me to tell what type I have installed ??

The gas fire chimney may have a flue liner, which I think, would be too narrow for an open fire.

the only way you will tell is either looking up the chimney or looking down from the roof. usually the throat and gape of the flue and fireplace is too small and narrow to get enough draw for an open fire. depending on its construction you could probably get a small stove and line the existing flue with stainless steel liner. i think the minimum diameter for a flue for a stove is 6 inches. recently put one in to a small fireplace and used a flexable double skin liner in my existing flue.
