31.10.2007 - HP is moving a substantial number of its Irish workforce from its operations in Clonskeagh to its Leixlip campus, a move that could involve up to 1,000 workers it emerged today. The company insisted that the consolidation will involve no redundancies. The US$100.5bn IT giant employs over 4,500 people in Ireland at locations in Clonskeagh, Leixlip and at a software centre in Galway. It is understood that following the consolidation the bulk of HP’s Irish workforce will be based in Leixlip.

According to the company, the plan is to establish the Leixlip facility, aka the Liffey Park Technology Campus, as a strategic centre of excellence for HP worldwide and locally to achieve cost savings across the business.

The decision was communicated to HP’s workforce in Leixlip and Clonskeagh earlier today.

“The new campus will be distinguished by its unique combination of skills diversity and an innovative new work environment that further advances HP’s leadership in the Irish market,” HP Ireland general manager Martin Murphy (pictured) commented.

The existing Leixlip campus will become the corporate headquarters for HP in Ireland and the company will invest in new technologies and productivity tools.

While the majority of the 1,000 workers at the Clonskeagh operation will move to the Leixlip campus, around 300 IT workers involved in HP’s €600m outsourcing deal with Bank of Ireland are envisaged to remain in Clonskeagh.

Murphy said that when complete, the Liffey Park Technolgoy Campus will be one of the largest and most diverse technology campuses in Ireland, with 28 nationalities and over 24 languages represented.

So... the writings on the wall for HP Belfield.

who's going to bail, and who's going stick it out? Whats the new site like?

    Great news

Can they just move their employees to a different location outside of Dublin? Employees, not CPL contractors.

I heard about this 2 years ago ;)

I was inducted out in Leixlip, its a really nice site alright, better canteen, more diverse types of food.

Its a bit of an arse for me to get out there though, it'll mean 2 trains with a commute of nearly 1.5hrs, my manager has been trying to sugar coat it by saying the rent is a lot lower out there... riiiight :P

This is great news for me if I ever decided to rent my apartment out. I'm 20min walk to the plant and a lot closer to Intel. But I wont be doing it any time soon but its good for the future!

Anybody have a more useful answer? Obviously they can't force their Irish employees to move to India.

Sweet. May actually apply for a job there, as it's only down the road (10 minute cycle). That is, if it ever improves:D

azezil, when you get off the train at Leixlip, there's a shuttle bus that drops people off at HP and Intel, which makes the "getting there" slightly easier.

Also, will it still be CPL owning your ass, or will HP be employing you directly?

Sure. It's not like it's moving to Cork. Also an underhand way to downsize the workforce.

Could be worse. Could have moved to CityWest. There's no trains at all out there...

So if they cannot move them to Cork where is the line drawn then? Up to 50km from the original location, 100km, 200?

I think once they offer "transfer" people, it's ok. Don't think they can "lay off" people if the job exists elsewhere in the same country.

I guess the first place to check is the contract - I can't find any info at citizensinformation.ie or entemp.ie to suggest that you can't be relocated. We're going through the same thing in the new year - still in Dublin city centre, but will probably add an extra 40 mins either way, and no more free parking :(

Yes in the future it will be, but I know this because I started out there, thus the comment with the "was" preceding that later comment about it will be a pain ;)

Effort of moving all the way out there tho! :(

I just finished working in that **** hole of a place. I dont think there is anything in the contract saying that they cant relocate you. When i was there they relocated one of the desks, Credit Swiss i think it was to some where in South America so I would say YA they can reloacte any where they like.

The Relocation to Costa Rica By Credit Swiss Was A decission by HP, Not CPL

why would CPL, an irish company move Jobs Outside the state?

thanks for giving me a break. agent smith.

Your correct CPL wouldnt throw money away like that they are too tight to even pay there employees a good wage.

I was on the BOI Tech desk for 7 months and them moved to an ILC position for the next 11 months.

Whether you can be relocated or not depends largely on your contract of employment. But even if it is not clearly stated what your work location is in your contract, the fact that you have worked in one location for a reasonable period (say 12 months) would suggest that the custom and practise (which carries a certain amount of legal weight) is that you work wherever you are located. In other words an employer cannot in all circumstances just unilaterally deicde that all staff are moving to location x. If that was the case there would be nothing stopping companies from relocating as a way of cutting staff without paying redundancy.

I would suggest that the staff in HP and CPL should join a union and get some proper advice. I know that a number of CPL staff in Clonskeagh have already joined the CWU.

    For info:http://www.callcentreunion.ie

Well I can't speak for the equipment but all pc's will be no older than 3 years old when the current system is fully implemented... which should have been done years ago but anywho we won't question who was in charge of enforcing that! *ahem*
