Anyone ever notice the "news" on Spin FM - Midwest Radio station

(Cue big culchie accent) - "today the cops busted some kids with grass worth....." " they are facing several years in the slammer"

Not saying there is anything wrong with a bogger accent so to speak(I have a touch of one myself :o) and I don't listen to Spin catch up on news events but it cracks me up.
Way to get down with the kids man.

On any other radio station it would be something like "the gardai have uncovered cannabis with an estimated street value of..."

Spin fills a good niche where you just want to listen to current music and not DJs. Once it doesnt go down the Atlantic 252 route of the same 20 songs played over and over again.

Use to love spin myself but finding 'joe and keith' sketches in the morning abit grating. Gets to be same old, same old

Always annoyed me the way they called cocaine "coke" on their news bulletins (103.8).
The whole tone of anything they did that wasn't music annoyed me actually (yes I'm easily annoyed) and even though I should probably like their musical output, for the most part I don't. This station is the closest we've ever gotten to a legal dance/urban station in Ireland and it still sucks....thank you Mr O'Brien.

Spin is one of the worst radio stations I have ever had the misfortune to hear.

the spin the author talks about sounds a bit like LMFM which is another regional station , the accents on that station sound like someone you might hear at a cattle mart , actually they have reports on the marts each day

still those kind of culchie stations are at least authentic , that spin 103.8 in dublin is thee most fake thing on the dial , what with there phoney american voice overs and attempt to be oh so ultra trendy on there talk shows by treating views like , i think shop lifters are cool with equal respect to i think young people are drinking too much nowadays

I hate the way Spin 1038 cut choruses out of songs to make them shorter, stop a song bang in the middle etc and then play liners saying "You know those guys over there are only playing 5 songs in a row"

Don't diss Nicholas Duff and the farming news! Some of us live for the news on bullock sales in Carnaross :D

Yeah but who in their right mind would want to wake up to Seamus Farrelly?

If you listened to Atlantic 252, then its quite possible that you are no longer in the age group that Spin are gunning for.

Again... Spin is catered for a largely teenage audience, its format has been tried and tested on hundreds of radio stations in dozens of countries.... and it works. Well.

So unless any of us here are teenagers, then i don’t think we're really in a position to speak.
But, you also may be shocked to find you don’t find like MTV either :O lol

its sad that a radio station in order to work as you put it has to pander to the lowest common denominator

No more so than Music, Television, Concerts, Theme Parks, Shops, Nightclubs, Sports, Clothes, Websites... All of these would 'pander to the lowest common denominator' in some way, shape or form. Why? Because it’s profitable. Teenagers play a vast role in the economy these days due to their disposable income and spending habits. If no stations such as Spin catered 'the lowest common denominator' then businesses in the above mentioned markets would find it rather difficult to target and tap into the wealth of such a young audience - Thats just one of the reason why SPIN was created.

Teenagers want music, shows, news and competitions presented to them in the CHR Style that SPIN pulls off so well – NOT in the way Radio One does, and it’s that reason several years ago the BCI created the ‘Youth’ licence. So if find you don’t like sound of SPIN well then the reason is pretty simple... You don’t fit into this ‘Youth’ age bracket that SPIN was designed to cater for.

Try another station more to your tastes, it’s what their there for :)

    Just my point.

There is nothing wrong with Spin when you get sick of the likes of Ray Darcy, Gerry Ryan, etc. Its like a breath of fresh air.

We have a similar problem here in the South East with Beat Fm. (I say we, though everyone else seems to love it). They're always going "while the others are talking, we're playing more of YOUR favourite music". Yet they have 2 news bulletins every hour, "cleverly" placing one at ten to the hour so they can justify the above claim. Genius....
And like Spin, the newsreader will go, "the tot was killed when her buggy fell under...." or "the drugs, worth 200 grand"..... But its funny too, like the promos going "4 hours of the best house and electro this Saturday night....in association with the fireplace centre, Thomastown" Brilliant

At least they don't have death notices.
