im just off the phone with a ryanair rep, who i was ringing to try change a booking i made

a friend i booked a name for cant make it, so i wanted to just change the name to a different one. no administration has taken place yet, its just a name on a system.

The flight is to birmingham return and in total cost 75 euro
The woman on the phone wanted me to pay 100 euro to change the name

    ITS ONLY A NAME

how in the hell can they justify charging 100 euro to change a name. i feel like ringing them all day and asking them the same question over and over again until they realise how stupid it is.

How can ryanair get away with such blatant disregard for a pricing structure or actual cost of administration, for someone to CHANGE A NAME kept in a database it must take all of 30 seconds, be easily changed and would be good customer service

how can they get away with that

    i asked for a refund

sorry were a no refund airline

    Why do they do it?

They would rather have an empty seat than change that rule for you. This is because they know in the bigger picture of things they'll make more money that way.

Yes but surely changing a name is trivial

100 euro is hardly a trivial fee for a menial and simple task

some of ryanairs extra charges are getting stupid.100 to change a name sounds a bit much.

If changing a name cost say 1 Euro, then a black market could spring up with people booking discount fares months and months in advance and then selling them on for a higher rate, as the dates got closer?

    spot on.

Most airlines charge something similar, and the airlines are very open about this particular charge

    Why shouldn't they?

You agreed to it when you bought the ticket as part of the fare rules. bbbbb explains some of the reasoning behind it, as well as the fact they they want overheads down - charging a large free disuades people from calling them to do this.

If you find it objectionable, don't agree with their terms and conditions next time - and you won't be able to book :)

Nowhere in the terms and conditions did it state €100 to change names when i was buying, and if its in the small small small print then am i really to know?

the flight was 70 and to change a name is 100

why not charge 30 to change a name, at least thats reasonable, the overall flight ends up costing 100 but its not a dead loss.

as for buffybots suggestion, your right, i dont agree, so i wont fly with them again, 1 customer down. let them alienate the rest of their customer base and see how long it lasts

    Yes, if you read it.

I thought everyone knew that it costs money to change flights. I've certainly known for years.

One cold hand:if you read the thread,The poster is objecting (quite rightly imo) to paying 100 extra to change the name on a 70 euro flight.

I stopped using Ryanair a few years ago, can't stand them.
Aer lingus tend to be the same price for a far superior service, when you add in Ryanairs 'stealth' charges.
They actually charge you for checking in at the airport now!
Whats next I wonder? Charge for using the website?

    Actually, where it says:
    Important!
I have read and accept Ryanair's terms and conditions, photo ID policy and the above fare rules and I will advise all other passengers travelling as part of this reservation of these conditions.

    (Please check box to continue.)

It links to the very terms and conditions, which state:
    Flight and name changes
    .
    .
    .

    * Passenger names can be changed up to 4 hours prior to scheduled flight departure through a Ryanair reservation centre only (subject to opening hours) and upon payment of a per person name change fee of £70/€100. Any name change made to a flight reservation must be for that individual passenger's complete flight itinerary.

So your lack of knowledge about this fee is because you didn't read what you were ticking that you agree to. I've never understood why people do that.

1 customer down. let them alienate the rest of their customer base and see how long it lasts

They seem to be lasting ok so far...

If it were me, I'd check if there are any other 1cent fares available. Forget the original flight. Rebook a new one.
