Getting ready for first skirmish.

    Hey guys,
I've decided I'm finally gonna go to a skirmish. Been following Airsoft since it became legal and I've got a few free saturdays to start playing. I'll probably head up to HRTA in a week or two. I just need to know what I should bring/wear. I like to be completely prepared, because I usually forget half the things I need.

I've a few guns, but I'll be bringing a P90 and an M1911 for back up. Thigh holster for the 1911, and one of those crossover straps for the p90. Two extra mags for the pistol, and three for the P90. I'm not sure should I just go with two high caps, or a high cap and three standard. Two batteries? Or would one last the day?

As far as clothing, should I pick up a tactical vest for holding mags etc? I won't have camo gear for the first few times, so what's the best clothing for the job?

Face/Eye protection, knee pads, gloves, camel bag, boots, food.
Can't think of anything else, which is where you guys come in! What else is needed, or is helpful?

    ______________

Okay, separate topic, just two questions. Two recently purchased pieces of airsoft equipment. On the bottom of the P90, what's this?

    img2341fg7.jpg

Then this came in the box for the m1911, I have no idea what it is, it matches a part of the front of the barrel.

Ok on the bottom of the p90 thats were the bullets come out on the real gun and because the Airsofts are made out of the same moulds they leave it there for realism. The piece with the 1911 if it aint a part of the pistol i wouldnt worry.

Tac vest handy enough not only for holding mags but bbs, speedloaders etc.

Boots are a definate unless you dont mind your runners getting destroyed.

Being honest if you dont have camo not much will help you so just wear whatever clothes you want and as advise get camo fast because regular clothes stick out big time

I meant in terms of being suitable for skirmishing, not in their ability to hide me :)

Ehooby asia on Ebay.ie. Loads of really cheap gear. Or if you want something a little more expensive, Viper vests start at around £30. I have a bog standard DPM one and its very good.

With a P90 you may want to get the custom one to hold the mags.

I'll go through your questions one by one.

    1. Magazines
It depends on your style of play. I personally like playing with locap or midcaps. To me there has never been much appeal to just being able to spray without worry of running low of BBs and not having to change mags.
So, if you want to shoot loads and not bother about reloading, use your hicaps. If on the other hand you like the idea of having to reload and be somewhat conservative with your ammo, use your locaps. That said, if you only have 3 locaps, you'll want to stock up on more. Generally between 6 and 10 are what people take.
So for your immidiate skirmish, unless you can and want to pick up more mags, I would bring both locap and hicap mags and see which you prefer. In addition if you decide to use the locaps primarily, you'll have the hicap as backup.

    2. Batteries
While one battery usually does last the day, it depends again how much you shoot. I generally bring two batteries as you never know what can happen. Your battery might not have charged correctly, or it may go bust completely. They are small enough so bring both.

    3. Tactical Vest
As Harekin linked to, if you'll be using the P90 primarily, you should pick up that vest. I've heard good things about it from other P90 users. Other tac vests will not fit your P90 mags properly.

    4. Clothing
Anything you don't mind getting a bit dirty. Cargo pants would be good. Something that is tough but you can move around in easily and comfortably. I would not recommend track suit bottoms.
For your top you can wear any old jumper, especially if you've got a tac vest on.

    5. Safety
Face or Eye protection, which ever you fancy. I've only worn full face masks when playing inside HRTA - otherwise I always prefer glasses. I find masks hard to use the AEG's sights with. If you go with the glasses route, make sure they are the proper type (get them from an airsoft retailer for your best bet) - you don't want them shattering when a BB hits them! They should also wrap around your eyes nicely so that there are no big gaps anywhere.
I use these and can only recommend them (I like them so much I bought an extra pair):
    http://www.flecktarn.co.uk/asgsg1nx.html
Just remember to keep your mouth closed!

Kneepads, I'd recommend as well. Kneeling on a bb can really hurt!

You've pretty much summed it up really. Anything else is purely optional (e.g. rain shell :)). Just bring a backpack and put anything that you're not using (extra battery, ammo bottles, etc.) in it at the safezone.

    Have fun!

That thing for the 1911 is a takedown tool. The way to dismantle an original 1911 is to press in the button at the front and twist the barrell surround around until the bushing comes free. The slide can then be slid off. The tool provided pushes in the button and twists the barell surround. This is not an easy thing to do on a real 1911 as the spring force is strong.

Indeed. And as a first time skirmisher he'd be subjected to all a full safety briefing, no doubt ;)

I really should have considered the size ofthe mags when I decided on the P90. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy two tac vests when I pick up more guns.

Gonna go for the army woodland camo on Ehobby

and the full tac vest from the Vest Guy, I dunno now to get in on OD or black.

Where the best place to get mags for the M1911a1? it's the KWA one.
Same for the P90. Gonna get one High cap for plinking/backm up, and the rest mids/lows.

    Thanks for the help guys.

if your getting woodland camo, go for the OD vest, black doesnt work very well with any camo, the best option is to get the vest in the same pattern as your camo, but failing that, OD would work best

i have the p90 aswell and carrying mags can be a pain, at the moment i only use two high caps, one in the gun and one inside my vest, but ive been meaning to get a load more mid caps for it, i was thinking of getting MOLLE compatible pouches and sticking them horizontally across my back, in theory i should be able to reach around and grab a mag out of a pouch pretty easily

Gonna go for the army woodland camo on Ehobby

Be advised that i have had 2 of 3 mediums tear at the groin.
Go for the large if your normally a medium.

Why not get the vest in Woodland?

We have some camo paint that he can apply to the area so it goes unnoticed.

If you decide to change your camo later, you wont have to buy a new vest if you stay with either black or OD (unless you switch to something else american, it could look like you've missed the switch over :)).
Woodland with black vest works well actually, but OD is more universal - fits more or less with anything you want later. Plus, it's easier to find good additional pieces (like leg rigs, pouches, etc. in OD now a days than it is in Woodland.

For the P90, www.AirsoftEire.com have P90 mags (both hi-cap and the lo-cap 68 rounders). Link to 68 rounders

Can't find 1911A1 mags specifically for KWA. You might want to check with places like www.fire-support.co.uk if they know of any that would fit instead.

The woodland on the vest looks different than the woodland outfit. I think black would go with more than OD. Anything from desert, to snow, to swat. I'm not making an order yet. Gonna pick up a high cap from BFSL, a few more expensive than Airsoft Eire, but I can go back if there's a problem.

Will go with the one high cap, a few mags for the 1911. That should do to try a skirmish. Then I'll order camo and gear.

In terms of skirmishing if you have a pair of non camo combats theyre probably your best bet. Any pair of boots that are waterproof and a hoodie basically comfy stuff that you dont mind getting dirty

How many BB's would be needed for an average full day at HRTA?

Bag is 5000. I usually use a little over half a bag. Sometimes a bit more. A bag is enough.

Thats because most of the sample pictures are that digital woodland stuff, just ask him for standard woodland.

Black (especially in vests, no offense to anyone who uses it) I have found works pretty poorly as camoflague in the sort of sites and conditions we all generally play on...Id advise either going with woodland or just OD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭thehomeofDob

If you look at them side by side, they look much different. I'll go OD.

Right, another question. The P90 is now firing full auto while in semi mode. It seems random. This is not supposed to happen, right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

No its not, its supposed to only fire semi in semi mode, but semi and full in full mode. Ask Kdouglas about this, he has a P90 so probably knows his way around it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭thehomeofDob

It seems from further investigation, a.k.a playing around with it. That in semi it's a reversal of full auto mode. i.e. a half pull does full auto, and a full pull back does semi. Strange.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

It shouldnt even do a full pull back in semi tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭thehomeofDob

Right I'll have to bring it back to Derick so. Just hope he has one in stock to replace it, as I'm not free for two weeks to get something else. Thanks guys.

No problem, tho how long have you had it? Alot of places warrenties only last for a few days after you buy the gun.

I bought it on Tuesday last. It's not been skirmished, and I've only put about 500 rounds through it. Not been taken apart, or dropped. Derrick is sound enough, I'm sure he can sort something out.

your pm said this was the other way around. i.e. half pull = semi, full pull = full auto, that's definitely not right if it's doing half pull = full auto, sounds like something has definitely gone wrong with the selector or the trigger contacts in the gearbox

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭thehomeofDob

No, PM was right, just written incorrectly. Either way, to be perfectly clear :)

While the selector is on full auto. A half pull with fire one at a time. A full pull back will fire full auto. That's how it should be.

Now in semi auto. If I quickly and lightly pull back and release, it fires one at a time. If I pull back a hair further and hold, it fires full auto. Finally if I pull it back as far as it will go, it fires one at a time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

semi auto is definitely working the wrong way around, this is a very strange problem alright
