    Hi,

I started feeding my cats Hills Science Plan recently and they love it! The only downside I find is the price of it. Anybody know where is the most cost effective place to get it? Also can anybody recomend something similar that is as nutritional but maybe cheaper?

    Thanks ;)

you could try one of the mail order places, like zooplus or pet-bliss (haven't tried it myself, but heard only good things). The bigger the bag, the cheaper it will be...

I feed mine the same, and compared to the cheap stuff, you won't need as much - so the bag does last longer...And my cat(s) (missing one at the moment...) look a lot healthier, shinier coats and all...

We had to take our cat off the Science Plan simply because she stank the place out of it, WOW, she could literally not only clear the house when she went the loo, but you could smell her out in the garden!.

Coming to think of it there has been a bit more of an unplesent fragrance! Can you recomend something to give them other that Whiskers which I have heard bad things about?

We feed our cats 'Burn's' cat food - they love it and its a bit cheaper than Hill's but not by much.

The dog's are also on Burns and they thrive on it - and more importantly seem to love it. :)

Hi, I feed mine whiskas, is this bad? Should they be getting something else?

Whiskas isn't the best food for cats, I heard its made from by-products of the meat industry.

There are more expensive brands available, some are more than four times more expensive than Whiskas but I see it as X brand is €16, but lasts two months, so costs about €2-3 euros per week per cat. I put €3 into a jar every week to cover the cost of the food. The cats smell really fragnant and their teeth are in good nick.

I heard that the more pricier food is healthier for the animals and cuts down on vet bills.

Most of the "wet" cat and dog foods are of similar quality so which one you feed doesnt make that much of a differenc, the real difference is in the wet and dry pet foods. Wet pet foods contain what they call "meat and animal derivatives", which can be absolutely any part of the animal. In more premium pet foods you can be assured your pet is actually getting some good quality protein from meat. Also the fat content of dry foods is less. The animals dont need to eat as much of the food as it nutrients are more concentrated- therefore in the long run it shouldnt work out that expensive and your animal will be healthier on the inside and outside, very shiny coat and good teeth the most noticeable. Eukanuba have marketed their dry foods as producing less odourous faeces so that might be a better option for people who have indoor cats or cats using a litter tray, it is rather expensive though, roughly about the same price as Science plan.

We feed our cats/kittens (we have two but they are between stages at the moment) Hills science plan kitten food. We worked out that it is actually cheaper to feed them this food than the supermarket stuff. They simply adore it. Whiskas was compared with a fry-up by the vet, it smells lovely, it tastes lovely but it's not good for you. Hills also smells lovely and the cats love it.

For treats they get Oh So Fishy, one pouch between them about once a month. Other than that it's Hills all the way. I'm getting it in the vets at about 35 quid for 5kg. I looked it up on zooplus and it wasn't any cheaper to be honest.

It's lasting ages too and because it's hard food it doesn't go stale as quickly as soft food.

Their breath stinks on it though! But their coats are stunning and their muscle development has been out of this world!

Hills Science Plan is cheapest bought from zooplus. We bought it for my dog for a while and according to my mum there is some set price thing where all vets and petshops have to sell it at the same price....don't know if that is true though.

Nutro is another good brand and I think is around the same price. (We switched to Nutro with the dogs and they seem to prefer it to Hills, though I do realise we are supposed to be talking about cats here not dogs:rolleyes:)

Thanks for all the fantastic advice everyone, feeding the older cat adult science plan at the moment but he prefers the kitten science plan I give the other cat so trying so hard t keep them apart! I have noticed the big cat has lost the small bit of excess weight he had and both are looking super shiney. Have to agree about the smelly breath though-not the most plesent thing to wake up to when they are on the bed demanding food at mad hours of the morning

If you're going to feed them the Hill's order a 15kg bag from your vet, works out much much cheaper than buying the smaller bags.

I feed my guys a mixture of Almo Nature - organic (from zooplus.ie) and Go Cat indoors, throwing in a few treats of wet food.

Is there any place to buy burns online in Ireland? Although having checked Burn's UK website buying online from them is no cheaper (possibly more expensive when the delivery charges (not stated) are added than buying at the local vets.
