I need help choosing a laptop

I am looking to buy a laptop for college. I just need to be able to use Word, excel, have good battery power, small enough in size, something simple really. I'll probably want to store my photos on it aswel. Around €1000 would be more than enough. I don't want it to be too heavy either. Here are 2 laptops. Please see below…

If you want Vista got with this. Drop the warranty down to a one year and upgrade the battery to a 6 cell. This will work out at €540 excluding vat and delivery.

If you want xp go with this. Drop the warranty down to a one year and upgrade the battery to a 6 cell. This will work out at €390 excluding delivery and vat. You could use vista on the second one but to run vista comfortably you really should have 2GBs ram.
