Could someone please kindly explain to me how it works? Does one normally pay on a monthly or annual basis? Does one have to be in employment to benefit? Are specialists in the private sector really superior to those in the public? i'd like to hear from anyone who recently switched to private medical insurance?

i see that quinn's is cheaper than vivas... but is the quality the same?

i'm enquiring for my parents, who are both over 60.

Your parents will need to look at the policies of VHI, Quinn and Vivas yourself to decide.

I'm with Quinn (formerly Bupa) through work so it's paid for me. But you can pay monthly or yearly, and you don't have to be employed to get a policy.

Having private health insurance doesn't guarantee you a private hospital room and a private consultant unless you are on the most expensive policy. But it does let you go to non-public hospitals for quicker treatment.

Most private doctors also work in the public sector.
