I know that when I trained in the states the mats were mopped 3-4 times a week with a bleach solution , people were asked to wear clean gis to class and to tape any cuts etc before coming out on the mats.

Unfortunately, that's still not going to be enough to stop it. It's killing more people than aids in the US at the moment. I think the problem will be mostly with no-gi classes.

Maybe yer right john but if people were encouraged to wear rashguards, tape up their cuts and shower after each session whether at the club or at home it definitely wouldnt hurt.

Yeah for sure, problem is some gyms have no hygiene standards, so one day at them and a person could bring staph back to another clean gym.. All it takes is a cut finger or whatever. The new strands of staph are not responding to antibiotics either which is what makes it scarier!

Lads, 25% percent of us carry Staphylococcus Aureus. Tis in our noses, and it doesn't go pathogenic (doesn't cause infective symptoms) on us.

That bloke, he has the 'new' staph. The one thats Meticclin Resistant. Ya know, that Meticclin Resistant Staph Aureus... MRSA.

Don't be worrying about staph over here yet.

We should keep tabs on any Irish grapplers that go to the states and quarantine them when they come back. I thought staph was just a skin infection, I didn't know you could die from it?

it's a bacterial infection that usually infects the skin surface but can infect the bloodstream via open wounds/cuts etc. which can be very dangerous.

Dont get me started on the whole MRSA thang.

Poor Randleman, he just has such bad luck. Arrests, injuries... Maybe its pay back for the CroCop KO?

    Peace

Just over two years ago i thought i had pulled a neck muscle whilst training but thought nothing of it...a week later i was in hospital on a drip, spending seven days there:(...i had picked up an infection which developed into cellulitus... extremly unpleasant, caused by the same bactaria...this is present in every individual but usually causes no harm yet strains are mutating all the time..mrsa being perhaps the most infamous.

I have had several milder episodes since but tend to recognise the signs...a spot on the leg, especially the knee, which often resembles an infected hair follicle, even so, i have ended up on crutches at times. It now appears that i am going to always be prone to this as medical treatment for it is still in its infancy. :(

Rest assured, I can't pass it on but i have to train with my legs covered...shorts are an absolute no-no and anti-bacterial washes are a must!

I am due to see a specialist in the new year and will post his advice in due course;)
