does anyone think it would be a good idea to have a monthly meet and discuss comics and graphic novels etc.

    it could work ,i think

and we could arrange for small press publishers to bring their latest editions and sell them on to prospective buyers

or is there somewhere that do this already ??

we have tired to do this before - we had some comic jams over the last year that were basicly get together in a pub and talk about comics and draw some if you wanted to. Had mixed results. Tired some via the creative ireland forum as well and its just hard to get a time and place that suits people. For those of us outside of Dublin its a pain to get up and then having to stay overnight. When we tired for one in Cork, people from Dublin just would not come. And even within Dublin its hard, people have jobs during the week and plans at the weekend. The illustrators guild of ireland has monthly meetings and some months there'll be a great show of maybe 10 people and the following month there could be 2.

I would love to have a monthly meet up/comic jam/whatever if people are up for doing it.

It's a nice idea, but given how hard it is to organise a comic jam worth a damn (or even something with more mass appeal like the Boards Beers) and get people to turn up, I think you'll struggle to get something that's any way regular with good attendance. As ztoical said, the problems in the past have been that if it's Dublin-centred, everyone outside Dublin has to get there and sort out accommodation; if it's not Dublin-centred, the Dub residents either complain or (more likely) just refuse outright to go.

Yet another reason to read Doktor Sleepless : "Where's my f*cking jetpack?!?" :D

I'd be interested in that, Im not sure if I'd have anything to contribute as a graphic designer but as a scriptwriter I would certainly be opening to discuss stories with writers and fellow like minded people. And I love comics so that would go hand in hand.

If anyone does organise anything or wants help in organising anything then please feel free to drop me a PM, maybe a web chat one night before we meet up, as not physically travelling the distance after a hard day in work might encourage people to talk during the first meeting and break the ice a little more so we all have things to say when we do meet up?

here's the thread for the last get together we had. Had a poster for that one which got posted to irish sci fi news, creative ireland, IGI mailing list, some of the comic shop mailing lists and forward to a whole pile of people and we had 3 people show [me, shades and tree]. The one before that in march had the best turn up I think we had nearly 9 or something if we don't count the people drinking in the pub who we forced to join us. I do rec upstairs in the duke, they let us stick the poster around the place and move tables and chairs around. They thought we were a bit nuts but a good laugh.

I hope I'm not coming across as overly negative, I would love something to be happening ala the house of 12's monthly meet ups in NYC and have no prob putting something together but it is alot of work and we've had very mixed results - people are great for posting and saying they will show and then don't.

it would probably work if it wasn`t in a bar and follow 24 hour comics day exsample and made it more accsessible to the average schmoe
and maybe not as regular as a month, maybe every 6 or something...

How about doing something around the comic convention in 2 weeks time. Either on the Friday night as a pre-event or on Sunday when everything finishes, would be a nice way to complete the weekend, and we'd have lots to talk about and everything that we'd seen

Thundercracker the Friday night of DCCC is gona consits of folks hanging out in the hotel chatting as is. so it's not a bad place to go to chat about stuff.
There is also a chance the Pros will be about.
Saturday will be the pub quiz in the Hotels Resturant. Should be a good turnout for that. And for those who don't want to take part there is the bar to rest and chill out in.
Nopt sure what's going on on the sunday night. but I know that's what I'm most looking forward to as it's the most chilled of all con nights and a chance to catch up with the mates you've just buzzed by over the weekend.
The age issue thing isn't really a problem in a hotel bar like it is in a regular one. So there is that bonus for those underage.

With the comic jams we aimed for ever 3 months but with school/college/work/travel it was very hard to find dates that suited people. Also the big issue with this country is were to hold it - other then a pub there aren't many options - cafe types places aren't going to let you sit there for hours and anywhere outdoors is out due to our wonderful weather. After one gathering a whole bunch of us went back to someones house and talked comics till the wee hours but its hard to ask someone to open up their home like that. I did have what was meant to be a comic barbeque in kilkenny but as I also work in animation it ended up being taken over by animators. There are some places like say the IFI that are good meeting places, even thou it has a bar its not really a pub but its also very popular and can be very loud and busy at the weekends.

I would love to have a small informal comic meet up happening later in the year as subcon, 24 hour comics and dublin comic con all happen round the same time so its like whack loads of comic stuff and then nothing unless your traveling to comic related events outside ireland. The best jam we had was the one last March as there had been a big enough gap since the last comic event. I haven't lived in Dublin for a bit so maybe there is somewhere that would suit, if someone can think of one let us know.

Sounds good, got my weekend ticket, so all I need now is an 'in' lol, most of my friends work over the weekends and dont have a boss whose considerate enough to give me the first weekend off to go to the convention and the following weekend off to go see Meat Loaf in Killarney (not an MCD event)

TC most folks at a Con will Be friendly enought to talk to.
It's just a question of finding something you have in Common.
I'm pretty sure you can come up with something.
