D40x Shutter Error Message.

During a recent trip to the Aran Islands, I was snapping away in slightly misty conditions but nothing brutal. I took a shot on programmed P mode and the shutter open but did not close, then an error message popped up on the screen telling me to press the shutter release button to close the shutter , which I did. It had a very grating noise about it , like a spring or something was loose. I Immediately switched off the camera and went indoors.
Tried shooting again and same thing for 20-30 attempts at taking a picture. Then resigned to the fact I'd somehow killed my 3 month old camera (bought in B&H USA) I put it away and left it be.
Then returning to it about an hour later I switched it back on and everything was back to normal, good crisp shutter work and no grinding horror noises!
So my question is WTF happened! and will it happen again? Do US purchased camera's have any kind of European/UK warranty coverage with Nikon?
    Thanks guys,
    Mark.

From what I understand American cameras have a 5 year US warranty. Lenses have standard 1 year international warranty... so you would need to send camera back to US to get it fixed if you wanted to.

Do you know what error message you got?

It was literally a message came up on the lcd screen "Shutter Error: please press the shutter release button" something along those lines.
Had me extremely freaked out for a short period of time.

as long as it went back to normal it should be ok., especially as it told you to press the shutter release button, it must be something thats expected from time to time., although ive never had it so for on my D80.,

never had it on my old D70 (20000 pics) or my D200 (7000 to date) but a friend of mine had something going on with his D70s very similar
the shutter will go up but won't go back down
it was down to something wrong with the guides on the sides of the shutter (probably dust or some other residue), after a clean the issue went away to never come back
    hope it helps
