Is it tru that PS3 games are region free in the UK and Ireland. So games bought in the states can be played on European machines ?

If anyone knows it woud be appreciated

Yes games are region free but developers can region lock them if they want. So far I think only one game has been region locked but I can't remember which one, I think it's PES 2008, but I'm not sure.

EDIT: You'd want to make sure your TV can broadcast a NTSC signal first though. It more than likely will and if it's a HD TV you'll have no probs.

Not sure about that. From what's been said before, it sounds like it's part of the licensee agreement for PS3 publishers that their games will be region free. The developers can choose not to support local TV signals in other territories, but that's a different issue, and a non-issue if you have a HDTV.

If publishers had the choice to region lock, you can be sure they'd be doing it.

Stranglehold was going to be region locked - but the re was a massive up-roar over it and they went the region-free route in the end. apparently.

Even if it says Region 2 on the back of the game ?

I think the PS3 itself is regionalised though, so a game bought in the US that is region locked to US will not play here on a European PS3. I think what the others are saying is that some games are not locked, so they will play on any region's PS3.

If the game box says Region 2 then that implies it's only going to work in Europe on our PS3, and won't work on a US or Japanese PS3.

You're thinking of the 360, where some games are region free.

The PS3 is totally region free - all games from all regions work on all consoles. Blu Ray movies (along with DVDs, PS2 and PS1 games) are region locked on PS3.

There's been a long standing rumour that the option is there for games to be region locked, but so far there's been no region locked games. Stranglehold was originally believed to be locked because one of their forum moderators said so, but that turned out to be misinformation coming from somebody way down the food chain at the company.

No, I'm completely unfamiliar with the 360. Not to familiar with the PS3 either as I've only had it two weeks. Others on this thread seemed to suggest that some games might be regionalised. I just wonder if the PS3 itself isn't regionalised then how would it know which regionalised games it should play or not?

All 3 of my PS3 games have a little region 2 symbol on them.

Also, my PS3 refused to play a R1 PS2 game that I have so it "knows" it's an EU model and not a US one. Or is it that the PS3 will play any region's PS3 game, but still knows what region it is in for DVD and PS2 applications?

That's because PS2 games ARE region locked, it doesn't make a difference if you're trying to play it on a PS3. The PS3 itself has a region code, but no game so far has been region locked. Blu-ray movies are region locked however, but apparently a fair few of them are region-free too. You just have to ask the people here who have been importing games from America and Canada if they work or not. I'd say almost every PS3 game has been imported at some stage by someone on this forum.
