Hi, just wondering of peoples views on this. I emailed a seller about an item and received a quote of £1.80 p+p. Bought the item for its buy it now price and added the p+p charges. Paid with paypal on the 26th. Received email from the seller yesterday to say my item was in the post. This morning I receive another invoice from the seller for original price but this time they upped the p+p charges to £5.00 and have refunded my original payment by paypal. I have emailed him and ebay about this but await a reply. Anyone ever have anything like this before.

So... it has been posted... and you've been refunded through paypal...

That would put you in a very favourable position I think :D

You can't alter an auction after anyone has placed a bid or bought the item, though the postage wasn't on the auction itself in this case so I'm not sure what the rules are. I'd say that since he mailed you with a price then that is your contract. Altering this after you have paid and without informing you is just wrong.

I'd also say it hasn't actually been posted yet. He probably went out to post it, and sent you the email beforehand. Then, on finding out the cost of delivery was more than he initially thought, he didn't send it and instead refunded you and sent a new invoice.

Now, I'm pretty sure this isn't allowed, but can't be entirely sure. It's certainly very poor performance and is probably grounds for you ending the transaction and not paying as he mislead you (either by mistake or deliberately) about the postage costs.

Since you've already contacted the seller and eBay about this, I'd await their responses. What he should have done is sent you a mail saying that the post was more than he originally thought and given you the option of refund or pay more if you were willing. His attitude is one of ignorance.

When he replies to your last mail, try to find out if it has actually been posted, then wait for the item to arrive. On arrival, you could return it to the seller, at his cost, or pay the previously agreed price, or pay the new invoice if you're happy to do this.

I would tend to agree with you about it not being posted as it states on his site that he posts large objects on the day and smaller ones three times a week - the first day being tuesday. I suppose I will just have to wait and see what ebay and the seller have to say but as you say its poor on his behalf. On another note he has already left me positive feedback on the 26th so if I go ahead and leave him negative can he go back and alter his original feedback or is he able to leave me negative feedback on the new invoice that he has sent me?

No, he can't change or add new negative feedback for you. One feedback comment per transaction is all you get. If you leave a negative for him, he can reply to the comment, but cannot do anything to the positive feedback he left you.
