What is the most economical way of using oil fired heating.

    a) Turn on heating for 1 hour at a time when it gets chilly

    or

    b) Turn down thermostat on boiler and leave heating on full time

Slightly different but I was talking to someone lately who tried this using a Stanley oil-fired range. Basically their consumption went way down by having it on all the time at a low heat than turning it on for a couple of hours morning and evening. Kind of makes sense as it's easier to keep the water heated than heat it from cold every time.
