Skype on three

Was listening to Newstalk last night and they had a piece about Three mobile offering Skype on a new phone due out mid November '07.

The Three representative insisted there was absolutely no cost involved in calling/messaging another skype user. You don't already have to be on the net via 3g or gprs. This would work on pre and post pay phones.

He said they can offer this service for free because once we all buy the Three phones we'll start using their other services which do make money for them (eg. watching Premiership games etc)

Someone asked if one could ring a landline or mobile from Skype rather than using Three's tariffs but he either didn't get the question or craftily avoided the subject.

Does anyone have any more information on this? Am I missing something here? (Apart from Three's reliability problems)..

It's been released in the UK soon with Ireland shortly following. It's basically as you described, you can call Skype to Skype for free but Skype-out and Skype-in don't work, you have to use your 3 account to make those calls. Also you need to top up your account by £10 amount every month to avail of the free Skype-Skype calls, don't know what the figure for Ireland will be.

More details here with vids and pics.

    This all sounds excellent.

Anyone know if this works while roaming? And if so, is it still free?

Yes it works when roaming but only when you are using Three's network abroad - just like the "3 Like Home" deal

Could someone post up the jar/jad files for Skype for E65, N73 etc?
I would like to try them on my Nokia 6151.. The application is not available on this phone yet, but I'd like to try the other versions.

    Thanks alot in advance!

    Heard about that, sounds interesting

Was talking to a guy in the 3store in Limerick today and he said that the N95 would be out this month, he says that 3 will allow you to use the skype service (heard something about vodafone disabling it), I asked him will you be able to call mobiles and landlines through skype at their rates and he said yes, anyone know if thats true (I can;t imagine 3 letting you call people for 2c when the money is not going to them)

Well he's kind of right, but I doubt that he actually knew what he was talking about. You cannot call land lines from the Three Skype client that you can download from their planet three pages, that will only allow calls to other Skype users and will not even allow messaging to those users, although I did notice that the Skypephone will allow that so wonder if they might yet come out with a slightly better version of the client for other phones.

You can get around their block on calling land lines though by using other Skype clients such as Fring but you'd need to be on one of the x-series packages to use that application.

Does anyone know how much it will cost over here? On the skype site it's £50 for UK which is about €72 but I'd imagine it would be much more over here...

The 3 guy on the radio would only say that it was going to be sub €150.

RE: N95 & Three, you can get the N95 in The Carphone Warehouse with Three, the price is €379 with a contract (prob the most expensive one....) I was in the Carphone Warehouse on Henry Street this weekend and they had prices for the N95 for Three, 02 & vodafone.

Ya I didnt get a exact price but for the €19 a month contract which im on I was told I would be expected to pay over €500 for the N95 which there is no chance of me paying.

No N95 for me anytime soon.

Would it be possible for me to just copy the skype files from a symbian phone and then use the special iskoot skype app on a phone that isnt yet in the list of supported phones?

could someone please post up the skype files from eg nokia 6120 classic?

which iskoot number does it call when establishing the call? I was thinking that maybe you can tweak the iskoot generic app so that it will call to those iskoot numbers which are free when using the skype app on skypephone, 6120, or other skype approved phones?

I was wondering the same thing about using the 3 number with the iSkoot client but I never got around to investigating it - if you dig around your phone with a good phone explorer you may find a configuration file with the numbers - these things aren't usually hard-coded into the app.

The 3 skype number is +353833333500. Let us know how you get on.
