Have these 2 coins, the silver one is as heavy as you would expect a normal coin to be, dated 1938, and about the same size as a 2 Euro coin, however the smaller one, dated 1944, is about the same size as a 2 Euro Cent coin, and very light, presumably because they were using all the good metal, at this stage, making Tanks.

    Thanks for posting, marcsignal. :)

Yes, you are quite right. Good metal was scarce in the later years of the war. You can even see a difference in early year and later year medals although care was taken to always maintain perfect condition of the medals. If there was a flaw in one of them they would be discarded. That is one way to ascertain original from fake, German Third Reich medals and decorations were flawless and exactly detailed. Anything else wouldn't have passed strict inspection. Some of the fakes nowadays are so badly made that the eagle, for example, looks rather like a chicken than an eagle :D

    Tokens.jpg

These tokens were given to internees in the Curragh Camp during the war in lieu of money. They were one sided, the reverse is blank. The tokens could only be used in the camp area and were redeemed by the local traders for the face value from the army.

I know they aren't German coins but it seemed pointless starting another coin thread just for this post.

    You are quite right, Mick.

They are part of German military history, particularly about individual servicemen and their time in Ireland.

I didn't even know they had those in the Curragh.

By the way, did anyone see the mural somewhere out in Dublin Harbour? It was done by a German POW. If anyone could take some nice good pictures it would be great. It seems to fall into disrepair and the building it is in is in ruins. Thats' why the mural is exposed.

    Nice Pick mick86 :)

I didn't know they had those tokens either ??

here's a few more 33-45 coins, similar to the first ones I posted.

Here's another couple of silver coins along with a 20 RM banknote. One is a 2RM coin (similar to the one previously shown by marcsignal), and a 5RM.

The 2RM coin (1938) has the mint mark 'B' indicating mint production in Vienna, while the 5RM coin (dated 1935, depicting Potsdam Garrison Church) has the mint mark 'G' indicating mint production at Karlsruhe.

Both coins have the inscription "Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz" / "The community comes before the individual" stamped around the edge.

Not coinage or currency as such, but still somewhat related...
    A 500RM War Bond.
Approximately A4 size and watermarked throughout but this is impossible to photograph!
