What's so great about the Wii?

    Hi all,

What is so great about the Wii anyway?
1 of the kids wants one for Christmas but is it really good and why?
We already have 3 DS lites(one of them is mine) - what can it do that they can't?
We have R4 cards for the DS, which in my book makes them all-singing all-dancing - can you get and use something similar with the Wii?
I've seen memory advertised for sale for the Wii - what's that about?
I know these questions are very basic - is there a sticky out there I should be reading first?
At first I heard about kids coming out covered in sweat after playing with the Wii for half an hour and thought they were just an active sport type game but now I see most of the games that are available for the DS are also available for the Wii - is the experience that much better or how is it different?
I've also seen posts here about getting your Wii modified and soldered in some way(whether or not there are legs involved seems to be vitally important in this aspect of it) - Does this have to be done? Why is it done? Are no legs preferable to 2 legs?

I'm open to any new gadget that's out there but I do want it to be good if I get it!

Yours in bewilderment and be fuddlement.

all I know is that I played the boxing game at a party one night and I was wrecked after it - although apparently you don't have to make such vigorous movements to play =)

Hey Jolo, You know when you first picked up the DS and realised that it plays and lets you interact with the game in a way you've never experienced before. Thats what the Wii does for console gaming. When you turn on Wii Sports and start playing, you're immediately hooked and you just get so caught up in it. I've had mine now since the day they came out and i'm still not bored with it. I really can't say enough good things about it. You're kids will absolutely love it and so will you.

Theres nothing like the R4 for the Wii yet. Well theres a few mods to play homebrew software but they require soldering and can render your wii useless unless done properly.
You dont need memory. I just uses an SD card if you find that the onboard memory isnt enough. Some shops are trying to take advantage of the unaware consumer by selling SD cards made out to look like the Wii needs them.
Just make sure to get a few wii motes and nunchucks so everyone can play.
Also, a simple flick of the risk can do the same thing as a wild swing. It just depends on how you feel about it.

As a console addict since year zero and with four kids of varying ages also into games I think the Wii is the perfect family console. My wife even uses it to keep fit and she never plays games. The kids love it but would probably prefer their DS's.

As well as a games console it also has internet access through your tv if you have a wireless router (you need an adaptor for wired access) and the motion control will see innovative software aplenty over the next couple of years.

    It's also cheaper than a 360 or a ps3.

It also looks pretty good next to my clunky 360.

As the DS is also wi-fi enabled I am sure they will bring out some stuff linking the two consoles at some stage.
